MUST READ!!!

We are seeing an increased number of reports of scammers contacting members of the public pretending to be from the ATO and claiming that there are outstanding tax debts and threatening people with arrest if the debt is not paid immediately.

While these scam calls may appear to be from the ATO with a spoofed caller ID, it is important to remember that a legitimate caller from the ATO will never:

• Threaten you with arrest
• Demand immediate payment, particularly through unusual means such as bitcoin, pre-paid credit cards or gift cards
• Refuse to allow you to speak with a trusted advisor or your regular tax agent
• Or present a phone number on caller ID

Never call a scammer back on the number they provide!

Throughout our lives, we are taught many things at school or at a tertiary institution that relate to a particular field. However, there is little education about our Australian Taxation System despite the extreme importance of its basic understanding. We all work very hard to earn our money therefore, often we seek alternative ways to increase our income. Perhaps working a second job or even working additional hours to reach an adequate income a year. Despite our hard work we often feel punished by being taxed large amounts of money when we pick up extra shifts. However, what if we could maximise our tax return by simply understanding our rights and responsibilities as citizens. The table shown outlines the tax brackets applied by the ATO on individuals in NSW every financial year. This table is a beneficial guide when lodging a tax return as it is used to calculate ones tax obligations to the ATO. Many people often neglect to claim expenses associated with their job, i.e. mobile phone bills, uniforms, educational courses etc. When claiming these expenses, the Gross Taxable Income of an individual is decreased. Therefore, they will be taxed at a lower rate which allows them to maximise their tax return.
