Could you spend $700,000 in a year?

Researchers at the The University of Alabama and Texas Tech University found, 44% of people who receive an inheritance or financial windfall do exactly that.

Others go to the opposite extreme, leaving large sums untouched in an everyday bank account for years because they're unsure what to do next.

The reality is that inheritances and windfalls rarely arrive at a simple time in life. They often come during periods of grief, retirement, family change or other significant life transitions, making it harder to step back and make clear, confident decisions.

Dylan recently joined the Equity Mates Media crew to unpack the common mistakes people make when receiving a lump sum and why taking a breath before making any big decisions can be one of the smartest moves you make.

👉 There's plenty more to unpack in the full episode. Watch it here

Daniel Palmer headed up to Cairns last week to spend some time with the Manunda Hawks Australian Football Club - AFL Cairns at their Sponsors Day in the AFL Cairns League – a club we’re proud to support as part of our commitment to backing local sport and the communities around it.

It was Indigenous Round, with the Minjil local dance group performing a Welcome to Country between the women’s and men’s games.

It was also a big day for the Hawks, with former AFL Hawks and Cats premiership players Isaac Smith and Liam Shiels flying up to pull on the jumper, before sharing a few stories at the sportsman’s night later that evening.

Wishing the Manunda Hawks a great season ahead 🦅

Keep an eye on The Business tonight on ABC News 24 as Dylan Pargiter-Green joins the conversation to help unpack some of the recent Federal Budget announcements.

With some of the biggest proposed changes we’ve seen in many years, it was a great opportunity to discuss what they could mean in practice and the broader conversations already starting to happen around them.

Thanks to Nassim Khadem for the opportunity to be part of this important conversation.

What would it take to retire at 40?

Does it mean living on two-minute noodles and baked beans for the rest of your life… or is it actually more thought through than that?

Dylan unpacked this with the Equity Mates Media team and rather than throwing around guesses, he sat down and worked through the numbers properly, in today’s dollars.

It definitely shifts the way you think, because it’s not something you figure out later – it’s shaped by the decisions you make much earlier on.

How much are you putting away?
Where are you building your wealth?
And have you got enough outside of super to actually give you flexibility when you want it?

You’re probably wondering what it actually comes out to… Around $3 million invested by 40 🤯 This will support roughly $100k a year until you're around 90!

Meet the Team: Courtney Biggs

Courtney is a Mildura-based Advisor who brings over 20 years of experience to her role, with a focus on optimising client outcomes and delivering value to those both locally and geographically spanned.

Having built her career from the ground up, Courtney started in reception and administration while completing her studies, before progressing into paraplanning and strategy and ultimately into advisory. This journey has given her a deep understanding of the financial planning process and what’s important to clients at every step.

Through her experience, Courtney has seen the impact that well-structured, tax-effective strategies can have on long-term outcomes. This led her to complete her CPA, strengthening her ability to work closely with accountants and ensure strategies are aligned now and into the future.

Courtney takes a holistic approach to advice, ensuring every client receives personalised guidance that aligns with their values and long-term objectives.

🌟 What’s the most rewarding part of helping clients with their goals?
Giving clients peace of mind to do whatever it is that want to be doing in life instead of worrying about finances

Dylan spent some time recently hearing from two of the best in the business – David Bassanese from Betashares and Shane Oliver from AMP Australia.

With everything going on in the world at the moment, it was a timely reminder that the media headlines don’t always tell the full story – context matters!

A big part of the discussion focused on oil supply and the broader flow-on effects to the economy, including comparisons back to the 1973 oil crisis. Different time, but some familiar themes.

AI was also front of mind. There’s a growing sense that we’re living through a shift similar in scale to the agricultural, industrial and digital revolutions and it will take time for the world to fully adjust.

Always good to step back, hear different perspectives and keep learning!

This Anzac Day we pause to remember the 111th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings and reflect on all Australians who have served in times of peace and war.

At the going down of the sun
and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Retirement’s a big step, and for most people it’s not just about the numbers – it’s about feeling comfortable with where things are at and knowing you’ve got someone in your corner.
