Working from home comes with expenses, but not every expense gets its own deduction.

Why?
Because the ATO's fixed rate method already accounts for certain running costs, such as work-related electricity, internet and phone usage.

Claiming those same costs again separately could mean claiming more than you're entitled to.

Before lodging your tax return, check what your method covers and keep records of your eligible expenses.

Save this for tax time.

Waiting for 31 October? You might be watching the wrong tax deadline.

October has multiple tax dates, and depending on your situation, the one that matters to you could come sooner than you think.

21 October. 28 October. 31 October.

Different dates. Different obligations.

We’ve broken down what each one means in this carousel, without the tax jargon.

👉 Swipe to check which date could apply to you.

And don’t rely on remembering it later.

Save this post for October or send it to someone who always leaves tax until the last minute.

Which one are you preparing for: 21, 28 or 31 October? 👇

Just one quick question…

The quick question:
47 deductions, 12 screenshots and a receipt nobody can read.

Tax accountants know exactly how this ends:

Can I claim this?😭

Accountants don’t really stop stressing.

They just turn the stress into a spreadsheet.

Panic becomes reconciliation.
Forgotten items get carried forward.
And trust? That usually comes with supporting evidence.

If you work in accounting, you already know the language.

And if you don’t… this is basically what keeps the numbers behaving.

Client:
But I literally bought these clothes FOR work.

We know.

Unfortunately, writing work pants in your banking app does not make them workwear for tax purposes. 😭

Ordinary clothing is generally private - even if you only wear it to work.

Eligible protective, occupation-specific or certain compulsory uniforms can be different.

So yes…

Client: work clothes
ATO: still clothes

Turning 60 can change what you can do with your super

But it does not always mean full access straight away

Whether you retire, leave a job or keep working can affect what options are available to you

Then at 65, the rules generally become much simpler

If 60 is coming up, it is worth understanding your options before making any big super decisions

Save this for later or share it with someone planning retirement

Client: No, I don’t have any cash income.

Also, client, 30 seconds later:

Oh wait… does that cash job count?

This is exactly why we ask.

Tell us everything, and we’ll work out what matters for your tax return.

Being income-tax exempt doesn’t automatically take GST off the table.

For religious institutions, the important part is understanding what makes up your GST turnover - because not every dollar received is treated the same way.

Some GST-free activities can still count toward the registration threshold, while genuine donations may be treated differently.

That’s why looking only at your total income can give you the wrong picture.

If your organisation is approaching the $150,000 GST turnover threshold, it’s worth checking what actually counts.

Save this for your next GST review. 📌

Tax advice from your mate usually starts with:

“Trust me, I claimed it last year.” 😅

But what worked for them may not apply to your job, income or circumstances. Taking the wrong advice could mean missed deductions, an incorrect tax return or an uncomfortable conversation with the ATO.

Your mate can recommend the pub.

Let a registered tax agent handle your tax return.

Speak with Tax NextGen and claim what you’re legally entitled to-nothing missed, nothing made up.

Setting up an SMSF isn’t just about getting the paperwork done.

Some of the smallest decisions at the start can affect how your fund works later - including who pays the setup costs and who acts as trustee.

Pay certain fund expenses personally without being reimbursed, and they may be treated as a contribution. Choose a trustee structure based only on upfront cost, and you could end up with more administration later.

The goal isn’t simply to set up an SMSF cheaply.

It’s to set it up correctly for the way you plan to manage it.

Considering an SMSF? Speak with Tax NextGen before you establish your fund.
