The Medicare levy surcharge trap many parents miss

If you earn over the income threshold and have private health insurance, this is something you need to check.

Many people know they need hospital cover for themselves, but forget their children also need to be covered. If your child isn’t included on your policy, both parents could be hit with the Medicare levy surcharge.

This can become a costly mistake, especially with newborn children or after family changes like separation.

Make sure your family is correctly covered before it becomes a problem.

P.S. If you’re unsure whether your private health insurance setup is protecting you from unexpected tax costs, send me a DM and let’s chat.

5 tax and finance basics everyone should understand

Want to improve your financial literacy? Start with these five concepts.

Gross profit shows how profitable your products are, while net profit shows how profitable your business is after expenses.

Your P&L shows your income and expenses, while your balance sheet shows what your business owns and owes.

Dividends and franking credits explain how company profits are paid to shareholders and how tax credits work.

Understanding tax brackets, the tax-free threshold, and Medicare-related taxes can help you better manage your finances.

P.S. If you want to improve your understanding of business and personal finances, send me a DM and let’s chat.

Don’t lodge your tax return before doing this super step

One of the biggest superannuation traps I see is lodging your tax return before submitting your Notice of Intent to Claim form.

If you miss this step, you could lose the ability to claim a tax deduction for your personal super contributions, potentially costing you thousands in missed deductions.

To claim the deduction, you need to lodge the form with your super fund and receive confirmation before the required deadline.

Don’t rush your tax return. Make sure your super paperwork is done first.

P.S. If you’re unsure whether your super contributions are set up correctly for tax purposes, send me a DM and let’s chat.

Stop focusing only on cutting costs

Many business owners obsess over reducing expenses, but increasing revenue can have a much bigger impact on profit.

One of the simplest ways to grow your net profit is increasing your prices. The key is understanding how much you can increase prices before losing customers affects your bottom line.

For example, a 10% price increase on a $1 million business could add $100,000 to revenue if customers stay.

Sometimes the biggest growth opportunity isn’t spending less, it’s charging what your business is worth.

P.S. If you’re a business owner and want to find ways to improve your profitability, send me a DM and let’s chat.

Is Victoria about to see one of its biggest political shake-ups in years?

For decades, Victorian politics has largely been a contest between Labor and the Liberals.

Now One Nation is firmly part of the conversation, and suddenly the next election looks very different.

Are voters genuinely fed up with the two major parties, or will things shift again before election day?

P.S. What do you think this says about where Victorian politics is heading?

Does moving overseas automatically stop Australian tax?

Thinking about moving overseas? You need to understand your tax residency first.

Leaving Australia doesn’t automatically mean you stop paying Australian tax. You generally need to become a foreign resident for tax purposes, otherwise your overseas income may still need to be reported in Australia.

Tax residency can be complex and depends on your circumstances, so don’t assume you’re no longer taxable just because you’ve moved countries.

P.S. If you’re planning to move overseas and want to understand the tax implications, send me a DM and let’s chat.

Should you get a depreciation schedule for your investment property?

If you own an investment property, this could be a tax deduction you’re missing.

A depreciation schedule can help you claim deductions like capital works and eligible asset depreciation, potentially reducing your taxable income.

A quantity surveyor prepares a report outlining what you can claim, and the figures can then be used in your tax return.

It’s a simple step that many property investors overlook.

P.S. If you want to understand what deductions you could be missing on your investment property, send me a DM and let’s chat.

Do you actually need private health insurance?

Private health insurance isn’t always as simple as “everyone needs it.”

If you’re over 31 and don’t have cover, Lifetime Health Cover loading can increase your premiums when you eventually take out a policy.

For higher income earners, hospital cover may also help avoid the Medicare levy surcharge. However, extras cover may not always provide value if you rarely use it.

The right decision depends on your age, income, health, and personal circumstances.

P.S. If you’re unsure whether your current cover is actually worth it, send me a DM and let’s chat.
