💰 Payday Super is a win for Australian workers

From 1 July 2026, many employers will begin moving towards paying superannuation at the same time as your wages.

While it may not seem like a big change, it could make a meaningful difference to your retirement savings over time.

Why?

✅ Your money starts working for you sooner, giving it more time to benefit from investment returns and compound growth.

✅ Regular contributions help take advantage of dollar cost averaging – investing consistently over time means you’ll automatically buy more units when markets are lower and fewer when they’re higher, reducing the temptation to try and “time the market.”

✅ It also makes it easier to see if your employer is paying your super correctly, rather than waiting until the end of each quarter.

🏠 Proposed Changes to SMSF Property Borrowing

The Greens have confirmed they will support Labor’s Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 1) Bill 2026 through the Senate, covering changes to capital gains tax, negative gearing and discretionary trusts.

As part of that agreement, Labor has reportedly agreed to ban Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSFs) from using Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangements (LRBAs) to acquire residential property.

While the legislation has not yet passed and important details are still to be confirmed, current reports suggest:

✅The proposed ban is aimed at residential property only
✅Commercial property borrowing through SMSFs does not appear to be affected
✅ Existing arrangements may be grandfathered, although this has not yet been confirmed

For anyone currently in the process of purchasing a residential property through their SMSF using borrowings, now may be the time to seek advice and understand your options.

RBA Update 📢

The Reserve Bank has left the official cash rate unchanged at 4.35% today. After three rate rises earlier this year, the RBA has opted to pause and assess how the economy responds.

For borrowers, today’s decision should mean no immediate change to variable home loan rates. For savers and retirees, higher interest rates continue to support cash and term deposit returns.

As always, interest rates are just one piece of the puzzle. The right strategy depends on your individual circumstances, goals and timeframe.

The latest RBA rate increase to 4.35% will understandably create pressure for many borrowers and businesses. However, higher interest rates are not universally negative.

For Australians with savings, term deposits, cash holdings or fixed income investments, higher rates can improve returns and provide more income certainty. Retirees in particular, many of whom rely on interest income or are helping family financially, may finally see better outcomes on conservative investments after many years of very low rates.

As always, the impact of rising rates depends on your personal circumstances, debt levels and investment strategy which is why balanced financial planning remains important through changing economic conditions.
