If you are working from home, or conduct business from home (such as invoicing, advertising etc), you should be keeping records of your activities in your home office diary.

For most people, the additional running costs of working from your home can be a tax deduction. There are two main methods, both will require a diary to substantiate your claim.

βœ…1) Fixed Rate Method ($0.70 per hour)
A simple rate that will include your electricity, gas, internet and data, phone, stationery and computer consumables like printer ink.
πŸ“Ž Keep a diary of the full year, with the number of hours worked at home. You should be keeping this updated fairly regularly, (eg every day)
πŸ“Ž - Depreciating assets

βœ…2) Actual cost method.
A little bit more tricky, but not impossible. Alongside your normal receipts and invoices as proof, keep a diary to separate your work versus private use for expenses that will have private use. The most common will be for:
πŸ“Ž - Mobile and Internet - Keep a diary for each expense of your work versus private use. This will probably align with your home-office hours. However your mobile phone may need a separate diary if you are out and about.
πŸ“Ž - Electricity you will need a list of all your devices, as well as their typical power use, and record the amount of time you are in your office using those devices.
πŸ“Ž - Consumables and other expenses.
πŸ“Ž - Depreciating assets

Have your tax return completed pain free and prepared by a registered Tax Agent.

If you employ staff, the July-September Superannuation is due soon. By law, the Super must be paid into employee's super fund accounts by the 28th. If you are using services such as Xero's Automatic Superannuation or MYOB Pay Super, process your Superannuation THE WEEK BEFORE the due date, so that there is enough time for the money to be drawn from your business bank account > clearing house > employee super fund accounts.

If payment is late, Super Guarantee Charge laws come into play, and you may risk losing your tax deduction, penalties and interest, as well as over-time wages being counted towards calculating Superannuation.

If you are close to the due date, and haven't processed your super yet, and have 19 or less employees, consider using the ATO Small Business Superannuation Clearing House. Payments made to an approved clearing house (only the ATO's clearing house is the approved one) are counted as received when paid into the clearing house. You can access this by going to the ATO's website, logging in as a business, and you can find it under the Business and Superannuation section.
