๐Ÿ“ข ATO focus on omitted income, expenses and GST credits

๐Ÿ” They are stepping up compliance action against businesses that omit income, over-claim deductions or GST credits, or use business funds for private expenses.

โš ๏ธ Common mistakes include failing to report cash sales, claiming private expenses and keeping inaccurate records.

๐Ÿ“Š In 2025โ€“26, audits uncovered more than $210 million in unpaid taxes, with over $50 million in penalties issued for deliberate under-reporting.

โœ… How to stay compliant: ๐Ÿ’ฐ Report all business income, including cash sales. ๐Ÿงพ Claim only eligible deductions and GST credits. ๐Ÿฆ Keep business and personal finances separate. ๐Ÿ“ Maintain accurate records.

๐Ÿ’ณ Card surcharges are changing from 1 October 2026!
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has removed its prohibition on โ€œno-surchargeโ€ rules, paving the way for card networks to stop businesses from adding a separate fee for card payments.

๐Ÿ”น Whatโ€™s changing?
From 1 October, eftpos, Mastercard and Visa will generally prohibit card payment surcharges. American Express, UnionPay and PayPal have also announced they will remove surcharging.

๐Ÿ’ฐ What does this mean for businesses?
Businesses will generally no longer be able to add a separate surcharge for customers paying by card. Card acceptance costs can instead be reflected in the overall price of goods and services.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ What does this mean for consumers?
The price displayed should generally include the cost of accepting card payments, rather than adding a separate card surcharge at checkout.

๐Ÿ“Œ What isnโ€™t affected?
Weekend and public holiday surcharges, booking fees and service fees are not card payment surcharges and are not covered by these changes.

๐Ÿ”Ž For businesses: Check with your payment service provider to make sure your systems are ready for the new rules.

๐Ÿ“… Effective: 1 October 2026

๐Ÿ’ณโžก๏ธ One price, regardless of which card you use.

๐Ÿ“ข ATO shadow economy prosecutions rise 80%

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has reported an 80% increase in successful non-lodgment prosecutions between 2024โ€“25 and 2025โ€“26. ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Over the past two years, the ATO has:
๐Ÿ”น Successfully prosecuted 350+ individuals and entities
๐Ÿ”น Secured 305+ convictions
๐Ÿ”น Seen more than $2.7 million in fines imposed by the Courts ๐Ÿ’ฐ

The ATO says deliberate non-lodgment and shadow economy activity can undermine legitimate businesses, reduce public revenue and impact workersโ€™ entitlements.

๐Ÿ“Œ Key takeaway: Lodging tax returns and meeting tax and super obligations are legal requirements. Deliberate non-compliance can have serious financial and professional consequences.

๐Ÿš— Top 5 myths busted: Cents per kilometre method!

Donโ€™t let misinformation lead to costly tax mistakes. ๐Ÿ’ธ

โŒ Home-to-work travel is generally not claimable
๐Ÿ“ You still need records โ€” even when claiming up to 5,000 km
๐Ÿš˜ Novated leases generally donโ€™t qualify for car expense claims
๐Ÿ“‰ Decline in value is already included in the cents per kilometre rate
๐Ÿ”„ You canโ€™t switch between cents per kilometre and logbook methods during the year

๐Ÿ’ก Always check how the car is used for work and keep the right records.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Use the ATO appโ€™s myDeductions tool to record work-related trips.

๐Ÿ“ข Payday Super myth busting!

With the third month of Payday Super underway, here are three important reminders for employers:

๐Ÿ”น Myth: If your payroll provider isnโ€™t ready, you donโ€™t need to comply.
โœ… Fact: Employers must meet their Payday Super obligations from 1 July 2026.

๐Ÿ”น Myth: If it isnโ€™t reported through STP, Payday Super doesnโ€™t apply.
โœ… Fact: Employers must report qualifying earnings and super liability through STP.

๐Ÿ”น Myth: Delays caused by a fund or provider mean the employer isnโ€™t liable.
โœ… Fact: Super must reach employeesโ€™ funds within 7 business days. Employers remain responsible for getting payments right and on time.

Stay informed, check your processes and make sure your clients are ready to meet their obligations. ๐Ÿ’ก
