If you’re an Aussie resident for tax purposes, and you earn income overseas, you may need to report it in your Australian tax return.

🌎 Worked abroad for a few months?
💻 Freelanced for an international client?
💸 Earned interest in a foreign bank account?

It all counts.

But, if you paid tax in another country, you might be able to claim a foreign income tax offset, so you don’t pay tax twice.

👉 Remember, many countries finish their tax year on 31 December, but ours runs from 1 July to 30 June. Keep this in mind when you’re collecting your information.

And don’t forget to convert your overseas income to Australian dollars!

From 1 April to 30 June 2026, the fuel tax credit rate for petrol and diesel is 20.6 cents per litre.

This change is due to the 60.9% temporary reduction in fuel excise.

👉 If you claim fuel tax credits, this update may affect your next BAS.

Not sure what rate applies to you?

✅ The easiest way to get your claim right is to use our fuel tax credit calculator. It’s been updated with the new rates for this period.

To know what’s a ‘yay’ or a ‘nay’ when claiming a deduction, make sure you:

· know what deductions are related to your own job
· claim work-related expenses, not personal ones
· don’t copy your friend’s deductions, as they may not relate to you
· aren’t just rolling over last year’s deductions.

Feel-good vibes AND a tax deduction? Yes please! 🙌

You can claim a tax deduction for donations to organisations that have a deductible gift recipient (DGR) status. But not all charities and organisations have this.

Here’s how to check if you can claim:

1. Search for and open the ABN Lookup tool
2. Type in the name of the organisation
3. Select the right organisation from the list (pro tip: if it’s not listed, you can’t claim a deduction)
4. Scroll down to the ‘Deductible gift recipient status’ heading.

✔️ If it shows a status – yes! You can claim
❌ If it says ‘Not entitled’ – no deal. You can’t claim a tax deduction.

Have you heard of 'Pay as you go (PAYG) instalments'?

They're regular prepayments of your expected income tax for the year.

PAYG instalments help those with business or investment income plan ahead and manage their cashflow.

If your PAYG instalments will be more (or less) than your expected tax for the year, you can change the amount you pay. This’ll help your prepayment to be as close to your expected tax as possible. Be sure you don’t underestimate your instalments as penalties or general interest charge may apply!

There are two ways to vary your instalments:

1. by yourself, through your myGov account
2. through a registered tax agent.
