🚨Scams Awareness Week!! | 24 - 28 August

As Scams Awareness Week comes to a close, it’s a timely reminder that behind every scam report is a real person or business whose money, time or trust has been stolen.

Scammers are becoming increasingly convincing, so taking a few moments to make sure you know how to protect yourself, your personal information and your business can make a real difference.

Remember to Stop. Check. Protect.
🔹 Stop - Don’t share personal, banking or myGov details unless you’re sure who you’re dealing with.
🔹 Check - Take a moment to question unexpected calls, emails or messages.
🔹 Protect - Act quickly if something doesn’t feel right or you notice suspicious activity.

The ATO will never send an unsolicited email or SMS containing a link asking you to provide personal information or log in to its online services.

You may have heard about the '$1,000 instant tax deduction' - but don’t rush to include it in this year’s return.

The ATO refers to it as the 'standard deduction for work-related expenses.' In simple terms, it’s a proposed deduction that would allow eligible taxpayers to claim up to $1,000 in work-related expenses under the new rules.

It starts from the 2026-27 income year, which means it does not apply to Tax Time 2025-26. For this year’s return, the current rules for claiming work-related expenses still apply.

A little Christmas cheer in July! 🎄

Last Friday night, the RW Ramsey & Company team enjoyed a festive evening filled with delicious food, fun games and plenty of laughs. It was a lovely chance to step away from our desks, spend time together and celebrate making it halfway through another busy year.

After a wonderful night with the team, we’re refreshed and ready to get back to helping our clients through tax season.

As we settle into tax time, we understand the rush to get your return lodged as quickly as possible.

However, lodging before all your information is ready can lead to mistakes, unnecessary delays and, in some cases, the ATO needing to amend your return.

Taking a little extra time now can help you get it right the first time and make the process run much smoother.

Please do not hesitate to contact the team at RW Ramsey & Company should you have any further questions.

Upcoming AML/CTF Compliance Requirements...

From 1 July 2026, accounting firms across Australia will be subject to new obligations under Australia's Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) framework.

Administered by AUSTRAC (Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre), these are designed to protect Australia's financial system by helping to prevent financial crime & improve transparency.

Although these obligations are new for accounting practices, you may be familiar with similar processes through dealings with banks, lawyers, real estate, and other professionals.

As part of these obligations, we may need to obtain additional information from you, including:
• Photographic identification (such as your driver’s licence)
• Current business or entity details
• Information regarding ownership structures and individuals who ultimately control an entity

No-one likes extra admin! And we understand this. To prepare for these changes, our team has been undertaking training, and our internal processes have been updated – to hopefully make this as easy as possible for you, our clients, while still fulfilling our obligations.

Safeguarding your information remains a key priority for RWR. Any personal data or identification documents collected will be managed securely and only through service providers that maintain robust privacy and data security standards.

So, how will this affect me?

If we contact you after 1 July 2026 to request additional information or documentation, chances are we need to do so, for these AML/CTF obligations.
Should you have any questions about these upcoming requirements, please contact our team. We are happy to assist.

If you would like to find out more information on how these obligations are helping to keep you safe, you can also check out the AUSTRAC website, https://www.austrac.gov.au/general-public/why-you-might-be-asked-id
