ATO TAX TIME Dos & Don'ts

Do:
* Take your time. Check your personal information and bank and super details are up to date.
* Review the ATO’s industry and occupation specific guides to understand what you can claim and what records are required to prove it.
* Engage a registered tax agent before 31 October if you plan to use one, and check they are registered with the Tax Practitioners Board.
* Download the ATO app to manage your tax and super and track the progress of your return.
* Use the myDeductions feature in the ATO app to keep and organise records for expenses and deductions.
* Stay alert to scams. Remember the ATO will never project a number when calling or send an unsolicited message with a link asking you to provide personal information or log in to ATO online services.
* Rely on information from verified sources such as the ATO website, ATO app or a registered tax professional.
* If you have already lodged in early July and realise you’ve made a mistake, for example forgetting to include some income, lodge an amendment.

ATO TAX TIME "Dos & Don'ts"

Don't:
* Be tempted to overclaim deductions or inflate expenses. The ATO has sophisticated data-matching and analytics that can quickly identify claims that don’t stack up. The ATO may hold your refund for further investigation if it looks suspicious.
* Forget to report all income. This includes income from side hustles, cash jobs, rental properties, and online activities and content creation. If you exclude income, the ATO may amend your tax return and you may need to pay interest and penalties.
* ‘Copy and paste’ from your previous years’ returns. If your job or circumstances have changed, this needs to be reflected in your claims and return.
* Act on information from third-party sources such as artificial intelligence platforms, ‘finfluencers’, or advice from family or friends without verifying the information with a registered tax professional or the ATO.
* Claim the newly announced $1,000 standard work-related deduction. This doesn’t apply until Tax Time 2027.

If you run your small business from home, make sure you’re claiming the deductions you’re entitled to.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to claim the decline in value of depreciating business assets (such as laptops, desks and office furniture) or running expenses associated with operating your business from home. This includes:
* electricity for heating, cooling and lighting
* phone and internet expenses
* office cleaning costs.

If you have a dedicated area in your home that is used as a genuine place of business, you may also be able to claim occupancy expenses. This may include rent, mortgage interest, council rates, land taxes or home insurance. Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances and will impact the main residence CGT exemption of the property.

Stressed about Pay Day Super?!

Remember that you have longer time to pay the first eligible super guarantee contribution you are making for a new employee or to a new complying super fund for an existing employee after you have stopped making contributions to another super fund.
In these situations, the contribution must be received by the super fund within 20 business days after the relevant QE day (payday).

You should process as per normal, but the extra time allows for fixing of any hiccups.

Boost tax deductions on an investment property with a Depreciation Report by a Quantity Surveyor.
A Tax Deduction Report will calculate deductions on Capital Works (the building) and/or Plant & Equipment of a residential or commercial property.
The cost of preparation of the report is also deductible.
Reports can be prepared on new or existing assets, so if you have recently purchased a property, ask us to point you in the right direction.

Micro-Donations
The requirement for a donation to be $2 or more to be a tax deduction no longer applies. This means all those 'round-up' donations you make at the check-out can now be claimed. The trick is that you MUST KEEP THE RECEIPT.

Donations must be made to a registered Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR). You can check an organisation's status by searching the ABN at ABN Lookup
