We’re not really sure that the ‘good’ in Good Friday is appropriate but here we are again, dear friends.

Uriah Heep are an English rock band that formed in London in 1969. Their current lineup consists of guitarist Mick Box, keyboardist Phil Lanzon, lead vocalist Bernie Shaw, drummer Russell Gilbrook and bassist Dave Rimmer. They have experienced numerous lineup changes throughout their 57-year career, leaving Box as the only remaining original member. ‘Circus’ is a song on the band’s 1973 album ‘Sweet Freedom’. It is a song about living in a world of fools and being proud of being able to do so!

This particular version is from a concert in London in 2000. The band are sounding tight and wonderful, as usual, and Mick Box is hot on guitar, also as usual! However, the highlight of this performance is a guest appearance by the one and only Ian Anderson, of Jethro Tull fame. No vocals on this, that’s left to Shaw, just some astounding work on the flute. We hope you enjoy it.

A rather cool Friday after a rather warm week, dear friends.

‘Mother’, a song about a very overprotective Mum, is a song by Roger Waters, who of course was one, some would say leader, of the English rock band Pink Floyd. It is from the band’s eleventh studio album, the 1979 ‘The Wall’. The band played the song for the last time on 17 June 1981, at Earls Court in London. At the time, few imagined the show would ever be able to be restaged but in 1990, Waters who left the band in 1985, gathered an impressive collection of celebrated guests and performed the entire thing again in Berlin.

One of those guests was Sinéad O'Connor who performed ‘Mother’ with Waters and members of the legendary folk-rock group The Band. Her performance is quite exceptional, spellbinding to an amazing degree. We hope you enjoy it.

As an aside, Waters was less than complimentary about O’Connor’s attitude at an interview sometime after the show. But we won’t go there …!

Friday again friends!

Biffy! Biffy! Biffy!

Sorry to say it dear friends, spam alert, there's most likely to be a bit of favoritism over the next month or so. Brilliant Scottish rockers, Biffy Clyro, are gracing our shores in April and OWM #2 and his dear wife are heading over to Melbourne to witness greatness. A musical bucketlist!

Not as 'big' in Australia as they are overseas, it has been a long time since they have made it down under. Can't miss this chance.

Known for their ferocious riffs and raw vocals, the band can also pull out a ballad to match most ballads with ease! Maybe not 'Romeo and Juliet' by Dire Straits though, that is a serious ballad!

Anyway, enough of ballads.. the countdown is on.

It’s a lovely Friday where we are, dear friends.

Another song from one of our favourite bands, Jethro Tull. The song is not one of their better known ones but, in our opinion at least, is right up there in terms of quality. And in Jethro Tull terms, it’s almost acoustic! And with Ian Anderson not on flute, Martin Barre on xylophone and John Evan on piano accordion, it’s somewhat rare!!

‘Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day’ was released on the band’s album ‘War Child’ in 1974. The song was written by, surprise, surprise, front man Ian Anderson, who dubbed it his "… first climate change song…" due to its lyrics about the then current concern over global cooling. He later explained, “…This was my first song talking about the issue of ecology and, in this specific case, climate change. Back in those days, scientists believed that we were heading towards a period of global cooling, that we could be heading towards a new ice age.” How things change!!

‘Skating Away…’ has received praise from critics, who generally note the song as one of the highlights of ‘War Child’ and one of the most essential Tull songs. We hope you enjoy this version.

It looks likely to be a wet Friday, dear friends, followed by a very wet weekend!

It’s hard to believe that after all these years of posting songs each week we haven’t featured this Neil Young classic before! ‘Old Man’ was a standout track on Young’s magnificent 1972 album ‘Harvest’. The album topped the Billboard 200 chart and has been included in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Young is now eighty and recently cancelled a planned European tour, with his newish band the Chrome Hearts. No health reasons were given. He only stated he needed a rest. It’s hard to talk about it but we guess he won’t be around forever. There is only, and always will only be, one Neil Young!

This version of ‘Old Man’ was actually filmed in 1971, before the album was released. Young does an introduction explaining what the song is all about, which saves us from doing so! We hope you enjoy this beautiful classic!

It’s a lovely Friday, dear friends.

Amy Victoria Wadge is an English singer and songwriter. She has co-written tracks with Ed Sheeran, including ‘Thinking Out Loud’ for which she won the 2016 Grammy Award for Song of the Year. Having moved to Wales early in her career and having graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Wadge started performing at open mic sessions in Cardiff's Toucan Club and soon started gaining critical recognition. She was quickly spotted and received encouragement from some of the big players in the city, among them the Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia and the Super Furry Animals producer, Greg Haver, who recorded her debut mini-album, 'The Famous Hour’. She played alongside Stereophonics, Embrace and Lenny Kravitz at the launch party for BBC 6 Music and in 2002 won ‘Best Female Solo Act’ at the annual Welsh Music Awards, ahead of Charlotte Church. In 2003, she toured Australia with the Welsh Rugby Team during the Rugby World Cup and later that year, she retained her 'Best Female Solo Act’ at the Welsh Music Awards.

In 2018 and 2019 Wadge wrote the songs for the soundtrack of the BBC Wales series, ‘keeping faith’. The theme song, ‘faith’s song’, is a moving, highly emotional song that is guaranteed to bring tears to the eyes if you have seen the series. It is on Britbox, and possibly other channels at the moment, so watch it if you can. We hope you enjoy the song.

A lovely Friday today, dear friends, and lunch is beckoning!

Most of you would know that Thin Lizzy are an Irish rock band that formed in Dublin in 1969. The band initially consisted of bass guitarist, lead vocalist and principal songwriter Phil Lynott, drummer Brian Downey, guitarist Eric Bell and organist Eric Wrixon. Guitarist supreme, Gary Moore, joined the band in 1973 but left shortly after in 1974. He rejoined for a short time in 1978 and 1979. Moore was replaced with Scott Gorham, an American guitarist, who is also pretty special on lead guitar!

The band’s singles ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ (1972), ‘The Boys Are Back in Town’ (1976) and ‘Waiting for an Alibi’ (1979) were international hits and several Thin Lizzy albums reached the top ten in the UK.

A planned 1976 tour of America was cancelled when Lynott fell ill with hepatitis. While ill, he remarkably wrote most of the album ‘Johnny the Fox’ which was recorded later in 1976. The album includes the song ‘Don't Believe a Word’. This particular version is from the BBC’s Old Grey Whistle Test in 1979. It starts off rather slowly with some lovely vocals from Moore and Lynott and then Moore and Gorham raise the tempo with some excellent lead guitar work!

Afternoon friends

OWM #2 was lucky enough to witness a surreal musical experience last week as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds graced our little town with their collective genius.

Nick Cave must surely be one of the world's greatest singer-songwriters and performers. Along with the Bad Seeds, and notably, the indescribable talents of Warren Ellis on violin and everything else, they are the creators of an incredible catalogue of music.

Ethereal, chaotic, beautiful and destructive, the music seems to transcend to the heavens, or in some instances, hell.

Playing bass for the Bad Seeds at the moment is also none other than the great Colin Greenwood of Radiohead, just to ensure one's mind is completely blown.

Here is a clip from the current world tour, and the title track off their latest 2024 album, Wild God.

It’s a nice Friday where we are, dear friends. Make the most of it because it’s going to be uncomfortably hot over the next few days!

We have some good, old-fashioned pop music for you today! ‘Destroyer’ is a song, written by Ray Davies, by British rock band the Kinks It was released as a track on the group's nineteenth album, ‘Give the People What They Want’, in August 1981, and was the album's lead single in the US. It was not released as a single in the UK. The song features references to the band's earlier hits, including the riff from 1964's ‘All Day and All of the Night’ and lyrics inspired by 1970's ‘Lola’. The lyrics feature the return of the transvestite title character from ‘Lola’. In ‘Destroyer’, the singer brings Lola to his place where he becomes increasingly paranoid! Like other Kinks songs of the period, ‘Destroyer’ features a heavier, rock-based sound.

This particular version of the track, which opens with a brief introduction from the band’s song ‘You Really Got Me’, aired on the Don Lane show in 1982. The Don Lane Show was an Australian television variety show which aired twice a week on the Nine Network from 1975 to 1983. The show was created by Don Lane who co-hosted it with Bert Newton. We hope you enjoy it.

Happy rock n roll Friday friends

OWM #2 had the pleasure of witnessing Yungblud (Dominic Harrison) play live last night and there are not enough superlatives to do this guy justice. The energy in the room was infectious. His stage presence unlike anything rock n roll has seen in many, many, many years. We could have used the word 'many' several more times but you get the point. This guy is the real deal.

We love his attitude towards life and rock n roll. He pays homage to the music and artists that have come before while creating his own incredible legacy at the same time. A dear friend of ours reckons he will headline Glastonbury in the next few years, we reckon he might be right!

The boy, who wears Ozzy Osbourne's famous cross around his neck, has some serious talent. He might just be the saviour of rock n roll. And whether or not you think it needs saving, rock n roll definitely needs Yungblud!

Turn this up friends, this is rock n roll. Remember it?
