If your business claims fuel tax credits, it's time for a quick pit stop. ⛽

From 1 April to 30 June 2026, the fuel tax credit rate for petrol and diesel is 20.6 cents per litre due to the temporary reduction in fuel excise.

This change may affect the amount you can claim on your next BAS. ☝🏻

If you’re not sure which rate applies to your business, don't leave it running on empty. The ATO's Fuel Tax Credit Calculator has been updated with the latest rates to help you get it right. 👇🏻

Working more than one job? 🤔
Here's a tax tip that could save you from an unexpected surprise at tax time.

📍The tax-free threshold applies to the first $18,200 of your total income for the year, not to each job you have.

📍Generally, you should only claim the tax-free threshold from one employer at a time. If you claim it from every job, you may not have enough tax withheld throughout the year, which could leave you with a tax bill when you lodge your return.

Think of the tax-free threshold like a birthday cake; you only get one, no matter how many parties you attend. 🫡

Not sure if you've claimed the tax-free threshold correctly?
Get in touch, and I'll help make sure there are no surprises at tax time.

If a friend, influencer or random person online promises a huge tax refund, be careful before taking their advice. 💥

Remember, you're responsible for what's included in your tax return, even if someone else told you it was okay to claim.

Watch out for:

❎Tax advice from unqualified people
❎Fake websites and social media posts
❎"Too good to be true" refund tips
❎Tax schemes designed to beat the system
❎ATO impersonation scams

And yes. Even AI can get it wrong. AI tools can provide outdated, incomplete, or incorrect information, so always double-check advice against trusted sources such as the ATO or your registered tax agent.

A bigger refund isn't always a better refund if you have to pay it back later. ☝🏻

If you’re not sure whether something you've seen online is legitimate, get in touch before you act. I’m here to help you separate tax facts from tax fiction.

Before you add that haircut, makeup or skincare purchase to your tax return, it’s important to remember a few things. ☝🏻
🪮Haircuts, hair products, makeup, cosmetics, skincare and shaving products are generally not tax-deductible, even if your job requires you to look professional or your employer provides an allowance.

🧴Sunscreen may be different. If you work outdoors for extended periods and use sunscreen to protect yourself while working, you may be able to claim the work-related portion of the cost.

However, not all SPF products qualify. ❌

To be accepted as sunscreen, the product should be approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and have an ARTG ID (Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods identification number), an AUST L number displayed on the label, and the AUST L number confirms the product is recognised as sunscreen by the TGA and is different from the SPF rating shown on the packaging.

If you work outdoors and use an approved sunscreen to protect yourself while working, you may be entitled to claim the work-related portion as a tax deduction.

If you're unsure whether an expense is deductible, contact me today.

You can nominate or update authorised contacts to help manage your tax affairs and receive information on your behalf.

There are two types of authorised contacts:

💥Primary contacts, who can act on your behalf across all your tax affairs.
💥Account contacts who can act on specific accounts only, such as income tax, activity statements or superannuation.

It’s a good idea to keep your authorised contact details up to date so the right people can access the information they need when required.

If you're unsure whether your authorised contacts are current, now’s a good time to review them. 🫡

You can make voluntary repayments towards your study or training loan at any time to help reduce your balance. 👩🏻‍🎓

It’s important to remember that voluntary repayments are separate from compulsory repayments or overseas levies. If you still have a loan balance and your income is above the minimum repayment threshold, you may still need to make a compulsory repayment.

Voluntary repayments are not refundable, so it’s a good idea to check your balance and repayment obligations before making a payment. 👌🏻

If you want to reduce your study loan balance before indexation applies, you’ll need to make a voluntary repayment by 26 May. This will allow enough time for your payment to be processed.

The ATO is reminding Australians to be careful of misleading tax advice this tax time, especially online claims promising bigger refunds, easy shortcuts or “tax hacks”.

You might be surprised by what you can legitimately claim at tax time, which is why the ATO recommends checking its occupation and industry guides or speaking with a registered tax professional to make sure you’re claiming everything you’re entitled to. ☝🏻

Some unusual, but valid work-related deductions can include:

📍Flight attendants claiming specific footwear required by their employer
📍Guards and security workers claiming guard dog expenses
📍Fitness and sporting industry employees claiming sunscreen, hats and sunglasses for extended outdoor work
📍Hairdressers and beauty professionals claiming professional-grade scissors

The key is making sure the expense is directly related to your work and that you have the right records to support your claim.
