Spam Alert:

A reminder to always be vigilant about fake emails. This one is quite obvious as a fake/spam email. But, it's only the one person in a thousand who isn't paying that needs to click a link for these unpleasant types. Even as tax agents we are not immune from being targeted.

💯 Yes! You need to tell us about all of your income, including any cash-in-hand income.

It doesn't matter if your wages or tips are paid in cash, or you get cash from online gigs, you need to report it in your tax return.

It's June, should I buy a Business Asset?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Do you need it?
Will you get it by 30 June?
Are you a Small Business Entity?

If you answered yes to all three then now could be a good time to spend on a new asset if you feel you can afford it. If you are a small business and eligible for advanced depreciation now can be a good time to buy to save on Tax.

If a small company spent $100,000 on a truck (and receives it by 30 June) that could translate in to a 15% / $15,000 expense item for depreciation (ie your tax deduction). No matter no or on 30 June. That would translate in to a company tax saving of $15,000 by 25% tax rate, equals $3,750 back in your hand. That might sound small compared to the $100,000 outlay.

However, if you wait until July, then you get the same deduction value ... but not until June 2026.

If you acquire it now you get the tax saving of $3,750 this year, but, next year your equivalent tax saving on depreciation would be another $6,375 back in your hand or off your tax.

It comes down to timing. A new small company asset acquired today only has to work for 25 days to earn a tax saving of $3,750. That same asset acquired on 1 July would have to work 365 days to earn the same tax saving next year.

From 1 January 2025, all property sales will require a Capital Gains Clearance Certificate from the ATO. Else the buyer will be obliged to withhold 15% of the sale price. And you won't get that back until your next tax return. And we're guessing if you have a tax debt, that will be deducted before any refund. Make sure to line your ducks up before initiating a property sale with your conveyancer.

What Australian residents need to know about the updates to the Foreign resident capital gains withholding (FRCGW).

Always remember your invoice or receipt are your primary substantiation documents.

Still not sure how a tax deduction works? 😐

It’s like this:
1️⃣ you start with your assessable income, which is the money you’ve earned from work or investments
2️⃣ you minus your allowable deductions, which are the costs you incur to earn your income
3️⃣ this equals your taxable income, which is the amount you actually pay tax on.

Remember, to claim a deduction, you’ll need to meet the eligibility requirements, and have a record (like a receipt) 🧾
