Many company directors assume company tax debt stays with the business.

Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

If your company has unpaid PAYG withholding, GST or Super Guarantee obligations, the ATO may issue a Director Penalty Notice (DPN), which could make you personally liable for the debt.

With the ATO increasing its debt recovery efforts, understanding your obligations has never been more important.

If you’re unsure where your business stands, we’re here to help.

A director penalty notice is issued by the ATO to companies with outstanding debt.

When you receive a director penalty notice, the sooner you act the better. Especially as you have 21 days from the notice’s issue date to take action.

💭Step 1: Understand your tax obligations
While your director penalty notice will tell you what PAYG, GST and super guarantee charges are owed, our business advisors still recommend logging into your ATO business portal to check for yourself.

🔢Step 2: Assess your options
These can include paying in full, setting up instalments, restructuring or voluntary administration.

Received a lockdown director penalty notice? You’ll need to pay in full, or your personal assets will be used to do so.

☎️Step 3: Contact the ATO
This needs to be done within the 21-day period. Notifying the ATO of actions you’re taking will resolve the penalty notice.

What is Good Working Capital? 💼

Having too much working capital might sound great, but it could mean:
⚠️ Excess inventory or raw materials 📦
⚠️ Missed opportunities to invest in growth 🚀
⚠️ Not leveraging low-cost debt options wisely 💸

So, how much is too much? 🤔
While every industry is different, a good working capital ratio to aim for is between 1.2 and 2.

For industries like building & construction, where projects have long cycles and large liabilities, the right working capital strategy can help manage risk and improve cash flow.

✅ Positive working capital = More assets than liabilities → Growth & stability

⚠️ Negative working capital = More liabilities than assets → Potential cash flow issues

Is your business in a strong enough position to cover short-term expenses while continuing to grow? 🤔

Understanding your working capital is key to ensuring financial stability and making informed decisions about your operations. It tells you whether your business has enough assets to cover its liabilities, helping you manage operations, plan for expansion, and demonstrate financial health to lenders.

Working capital can be worked out as a dollar amount or as a ratio (see our blog for how). A good working capital ratio typically falls between 1.2 and 2. Putting this into money terms, this means for every $1 of liabilities you have between $1.20 - $2 of assets to cover it.

If your ratio is below 1, it may indicate potential cash flow challenges, making it harder to pay debts and invest in growth. On the other hand, too much working capital could mean you’re not using your assets efficiently, potentially missing out on opportunities to reinvest in your business.

By regularly reviewing your working capital, you can identify risks early and take steps to optimise your day to day.

📖 Are you listening to what your working capital is telling you?
Our latest blog breaks down the details and shares more strategies to improve your financial position.

And if you don’t speak working capital?

That’s where our business advisors come in. We can help you dive into the details and get insight into your business.

🏠 Could your mortgage be generating (not taking) income?

Debt recycling can be a great investment strategy to support business growth. But, how you do it depends on two things:

1️⃣ Your business structure and terms
2️⃣ Having extra cash to make additional repayments

Your business structure plays a big part, with the process a lot more straight forward for sole traders than companies or trusts.

But using this strategy without understanding how this could impact you come tax time can got you in ATO hot water.

The key: chat to a business advisor or your accountant before you get started.
