Australian shoppers just hit the brakes. Is your stock still accelerating?
Retail growth is about to roughly halve.
Deloitte Access Economics' latest quarterly forecast has real retail turnover growth sliding from 2.8% in 2025–26 to 1.5% in 2026–27.
The slowdown is uneven, and that's where the risk sits:
→ Household goods: from 5.8% growth to a 0.2% decline
→ Clothing and footwear: 1.7% down to 0.1%
→ Department stores and large online retailers: 2.2% down to 1.1%
→ Food and smaller treats: recovering from a 0.1% decline to 1.6% growth
Shoppers are still spending. They're just spending smaller.
For a growing retailer, wholesaler, or distributor, that shift shows up in three places:
→ Inventory: Reorder points set for last year's customer will overbuy big-ticket SKUs. Every extra week on the shelf is cash sitting on the shelf.
→ Cash flow: Slower stock turns stretch your cash conversion cycle while supplier terms stay fixed. After three rate hikes this year, funding that gap costs more.
→ Margin: Clearance discounting to shift slow movers eats the margin your budget counted on.
The businesses that handle 2026–27 well will reforecast demand now, while there's still room to adjust January buys and protect working capital.
