Financial chaos had its moment.
Being organised is in. 💅

And if you need a little help getting there… well, having a good accountant and bookkeeper is also kind of chic. 😉💙

🧾 Stop Making Future You Deal With It 😂

The easiest way to save time reconciling?
Do it regularly.
Leaving weeks (or months 😬) of transactions sitting there only makes the job bigger later.

A few simple habits can make a HUGE difference:
📅 Reconcile regularly
🏦 Make sure your bank feeds are working correctly
⚙️ Set up bank rules for regular transactions
💳 Keep business and personal spending separate
🧾 Keep receipts and supporting documents organised
❓ Deal with mystery transactions while you still remember what they were

Keeping your bookkeeping up to date doesn't just save time. It also means you have a much clearer picture of how your business is actually performing.
And if reconciling is permanently sitting on your “I'll do it later” list...
That's what bookkeepers are for. 😉

Accounting vs Bookkeeping: What’s the Difference? 🤔

They work together, but they’re not quite the same thing.

📚 Bookkeeping = keeping your financial records organised

Your bookkeeper looks after the day-to-day financial activity of your business, including:
• Recording transactions
• Bank reconciliations
• Accounts payable and receivable
• Payroll
• BAS preparation
• Keeping your Xero file accurate and up to date

Think of bookkeeping as keeping the numbers in order.

📊 Accounting = understanding and using those numbers

Your accountant takes that financial information and looks at the bigger picture, including:
• Financial statements
• Tax returns
• Tax planning
• Business structures
• Tax obligations
• Profit and cash flow
• Business advice and planning

Think of accounting as working out what the numbers mean and what to do next.
The easiest way to remember it?

Bookkeeping keeps the numbers organised.
Accounting helps you understand them.

And when the two work together? You get accurate records and better information to make business decisions. 💙

At PLH, our accounting and bookkeeping teams work together to help keep your business organised, compliant and moving forward.

💙 A LITTLE CESS APPRECIATION POST 💙

We think this deserves a shoutout.

Just a few months ago, Cess packed up her life in the Philippines and made the HUGE move to Australia to join us here in the PLH office.
And somehow, in the space of around three months, she's managed to...
🇵🇭 Move countries
🇦🇺 Settle into life in Australia
💼 Transition seamlessly from working with us offshore to becoming part of our on-site team
🏡 Get her own home
🚗 Get herself a car
📚 Continue learning and developing in her accounting career
💙 And fit into the office like she's been here forever
⛪ Joined a local Church

Moving countries is a massive life change on its own. Doing it while starting a completely new chapter personally AND professionally takes a lot of courage.
Watching Princess settle into Australian life and absolutely thrive has been pretty special for all of us at PLH.

She's worked incredibly hard to get here and seeing everything she's achieved in such a short amount of time makes us very proud to have her as part of our team.
Princess, you've absolutely smashed your first few months in Australia. 🇦🇺
We can't wait to see what comes next! 💙

🚗 I DRIVE TO WORK EVERY DAY… CAN I CLAIM MY CAR?
Usually, no. 😬

Driving from home to your regular workplace is generally considered private travel, even though you're travelling there specifically to earn money.
But that doesn't mean all work-related driving is off the table.

Depending on your circumstances, deductible travel could include trips such as:
🚗 Travelling between separate workplaces
📍 Travelling from your regular workplace to another location for work
🤝 Visiting clients or customers during your workday
🏢 Travelling to an alternative workplace for work purposes in certain circumstances
🧰 Some travel involving bulky tools or equipment where the specific requirements are met

The important thing is that driving to work and driving FOR work aren't necessarily the same thing.

And if you're claiming work-related car expenses, you'll also need to make sure you're using an appropriate calculation method and keeping the records required to support your claim.

So unfortunately...
“But I wouldn't have driven there if I didn't have to work” isn't quite enough for the ATO. 😂

Not sure what work-related travel you can claim?

👩‍❤️‍👨 WHY DOES YOUR ACCOUNTANT NEED TO KNOW YOUR SPOUSE'S INCOME?

“But we're doing MY tax return... why do you need their income?” 🤨

We promise we're not just being nosy. 😂

In Australia, you and your spouse still lodge separate individual tax returns.
However, your spouse's income can affect certain parts of your tax calculation and other tax-related obligations.
Depending on your circumstances, spouse information can be relevant when calculating things such as:

🏥 Medicare Levy Surcharge
👨‍👩‍👧 Certain tax offsets and family-related calculations
💰 Private health insurance rebate entitlements
📋 Other income-tested thresholds and obligations

That's why your accountant may ask whether you had a spouse during the financial year and request details of their income.

And yes...
“They earn roughly $80k-ish” may result in a few more questions from us. 😂

Having the correct information helps us prepare your return accurately and make sure the right calculations are applied.
So when we ask about your spouse's income, there's a reason behind it.
We're accountants. Being nosy just happens to be a side benefit. 😉
