2025 was a strong year across most asset classes. If you stayed disciplined through the volatility, the results showed it.

As we head into 2026, there is one thing worth understanding about what strong years tend to mean for the year that follows.

We have written about it here, along with the one question every business owner should be asking right now: https://acumon.net.au/news/real-cost-of-panic-best-move-2025-doing-nothing/

From 1 July 2026, super must be paid on payday, not quarterly. That’s a significant change for a lot of businesses, and the runway to get sorted is getting shorter.

If you haven’t reviewed your payroll setup, cleared a path away from the ATO Clearing House, or thought through the cash flow impact, now’s a good time to start.

Our team works with small business owners across the Hunter Valley to make sure these sorts of changes don’t catch anyone off guard.

When markets move, the instinct to react kicks in fast. Sell. Cut spending. Pull back on growth plans. Wait for things to settle. It feels like the responsible thing to do.

Research tracking investor behaviour across 23 years of market shocks tells a very different story. The cost of losing your nerve is higher than most people realise.

One of our directors puts it simply: “The worst thing you can do when it comes to money decisions is act on emotions.”

We have broken down the numbers: https://acumon.net.au/news/real-cost-of-panic-best-move-2025-doing-nothing/

Lest we forget.

Today, we honour and remember all who have served Australia, past and present. We are deeply grateful for their courage, sacrifice, and the freedoms we enjoy because of them.

We will remember them.

“If a tax bill comes as a surprise, you are not in control of your cash flow.”

That is one of the clearest things we tell business owners, and it matters more than ever right now.

With oil prices up and costs rising across the board, the businesses that come through strongest are the ones with a clear picture of their numbers. Cash reserves, quarterly obligations, wages, super - none of it should be a surprise.

Our tax planning service is really a cash flow planning tool. It gives you certainty about what is coming so you can focus on running your business, not worrying about what might land on your desk.

If the headlines have you wondering what this all means for your business, you are not alone.

War in the Middle East. Oil prices moving. Costs rising across the board.

For Hunter Valley business owners, it adds an extra layer of uncertainty on top of an already full plate.

You cannot control what happens in the Middle East. You can control your cash flow, your reserves, and whether a tax bill or a slow quarter catches you off guard.

If your numbers feel uncertain right now, that is worth paying attention to.

Most people don’t think much about their finances until something happens. A conflict overseas. A sharp drop in the news. A conversation at a barbecue that makes you wonder whether you should be doing something differently.

That moment of uncertainty is worth paying attention to. Not because something is necessarily wrong, but because it is often the first sign you don’t have as much clarity over your financial position as you would like.

We have written about what 2025 actually taught us about money decisions, and what it means for business owners heading into 2026.

If you have a family trust, your distribution minutes need to be executed before June 30. Not backdated at tax return time. Before June 30.

It’s one of the most common oversights we see, and it directly limits your flexibility in how income gets distributed to family members.

There’s still time to get it right. Our latest guide covers this and six other moves worth making before the end of the financial year.

“Payday Super will mean that some businesses do need to change the way they manage their cash flow.” — Emma Rosenzweig, ATO Deputy Commissioner

Around 40% of Australian employers already pay super more frequently than quarterly, so for them, 1 July 2026 won’t change much. But if you’re currently paying quarterly, especially with seasonal income or tighter margins, this shift needs some planning.

It’s not just a compliance question. It’s about making sure your cash flow can absorb the change without putting pressure elsewhere.

When the news is loud, it is hard to know what to actually focus on.

Oil prices. Rising costs. A war on the other side of the world. It is a lot to process when you are trying to run a business and get through the week.

Most of the noise will pass. It always does.

The question worth sitting with is not what is happening over there, but whether you have a clear picture of your own cash flow, your reserves, and what is coming in the months ahead.

That is what we work on with our clients every day. Not predicting the future, but making sure you are prepared for it.

A business structure that made sense five years ago might be quietly costing you now.

We regularly see Hunter Valley businesses that have grown well beyond their original setup, still operating as sole traders and paying more tax than they need to. A different structure could legally reduce that liability by thousands every year.

June 30 is the deadline that matters here.

Read our latest guide to find out what’s worth reviewing before then https://acumon.net.au/business-growth/tax-planning-for-small-business-owners/
