🚨 TAX RETURN LODGED β€” BUT NOW THERE’S A PROBLEM?

Many people assume that once their tax return has been lodged and the refund has arrived, everything is finished.

But sometimes, issues are only discovered later.

You may find that:

❌ A source of income was missed
❌ Deductions were claimed incorrectly or without sufficient records
❌ Rental property income or expenses were incomplete
❌ Crypto, shares or capital gains were overlooked
❌ Work-related deductions need to be reviewed
❌ Information reported by an employer, bank or another party doesn’t match
❌ A previous tax return may contain an error

πŸ’‘ Receiving a refund doesn’t necessarily mean your tax return was correct.

The ATO receives and matches information from various sources. If something has been reported incorrectly, you may need to review your return, provide further information or consider an amendment depending on your circumstances.

πŸ›‘οΈ NOT SURE WHETHER YOUR TAX RETURN IS RIGHT?

TaxWell can help you:

βœ… Review a lodged tax return
βœ… Check income and deductions
βœ… Review supporting documents
βœ… Identify areas requiring attention
βœ… Assist with amendments where appropriate
βœ… Explain the issue and your options clearly

Don’t ignore a tax issue simply because your refund has already arrived.

🚨 $1,000 INSTANT TAX DEDUCTION – NOT FOR YOUR 2026 TAX RETURN!

You may have heard about the new $1,000 instant tax deduction for work-related expenses.

βœ… Yes – it is now law.
❌ But it does NOT apply to your 2026 tax return.

The new deduction starts from the 2026–27 financial year, meaning eligible workers can benefit when lodging their tax return in Tax Time 2027.

And remember β€” a $1,000 deduction does NOT mean a $1,000 tax refund. It reduces your taxable income.

For your current 2026 tax return, the normal work-related deduction rules still apply.

⚠️ BOOKKEEPING: DON’T JUST LOOK AT THE PRICE β€” KNOW WHO IS HANDLING YOUR FINANCIAL DATA

Many individuals and business owners either manage their own bookkeeping or hand everything over to someone else without checking whether that person has the appropriate qualifications and registration for the tax or BAS services they are providing.

Bookkeeping is more than simply entering income and expenses.

The person managing your books may have access to:

πŸ” Bank transactions
πŸͺͺ Personal and business information
🧾 Invoices and receipts
πŸ’° Payroll and superannuation information
πŸ“Š GST and BAS records
πŸ“ Financial data used to prepare your tax return

If your records are handled or classified incorrectly, the consequences can ultimately affect you and your business.

❌ Incorrect expense claims
❌ Incorrect GST coding
❌ Inaccurate payroll or super records
❌ Missing supporting documents
❌ BAS and tax returns prepared from incorrect information
❌ Sensitive financial information not handled appropriately

πŸ’‘ Not all bookkeeping work must be performed by a Tax Agent. However, if someone you pay is providing tax agent services or BAS services, check whether they have the appropriate TPB registration for the services they provide.

πŸ›‘οΈ DON’T WAIT UNTIL TAX TIME TO DISCOVER A PROBLEM

Working with an appropriately registered Tax Agent or BAS Agent can help ensure your bookkeeping, compliance and tax records are managed through a more professional and coordinated process.

βœ… Know who is handling your books
βœ… Check their TPB registration where required
βœ… Protect access to your accounting and financial information
βœ… Keep proper supporting documents
βœ… Review your bookkeeping regularly β€” not just at tax time

Your books contain more than numbers. They contain your financial information. Protect them.

🚨 Payday Super is here – pay super on time and avoid SGC

From 1 July 2026, employers are required to pay Superannuation Guarantee (SG) more frequently under the new Payday Super rules.

βœ… SG is generally calculated at 12% of an employee’s ordinary time earnings
βœ… Contributions generally need to reach the employee’s super fund within 7 business days of payday
βœ… Allow enough time for payroll systems, payment providers and super funds to process contributions
βœ… Review and resolve rejected or returned super payments promptly

⚠️ Processing the payment isn’t enough.

If an employee’s super contribution does not reach their fund within the required timeframe, the employer may become liable for the Superannuation Guarantee Charge (SGC).

SGC can mean additional costs and compliance obligations, so it pays to get your payroll and super processes ready.

πŸ’‘ Taxwell Tip: Make super payments part of your normal payroll process and regularly check your super payment reports. Paying correctly and on time is much easier than dealing with late super and SGC later.

Need help reviewing your payroll and super processes for Payday Super?

Contact Taxwell Services Pty Ltd and we can help you stay compliant.

🏠 NEGATIVE GEARING – IMPORTANT CHANGES FOR PROPERTY INVESTORS

The Government has announced changes to negative gearing for residential property from 1 July 2027.

Here are the 3 key points:

πŸ—οΈ 1. NEW BUILDS
Negative gearing will continue to be available for eligible new residential builds.

🏑 2. EXISTING PROPERTIES – GRANDFATHERED
Properties acquired before 7:30pm AEST on 12 May 2026 will be grandfathered.

This means the existing negative gearing rules will continue to apply while the investor holds the property.

⚠️ 3. ESTABLISHED PROPERTIES BOUGHT AFTER 12 MAY 2026
From 1 July 2027, rental losses generally cannot be used to reduce salary, wages or other non-property income.

Instead, eligible losses can be offset against residential property income or carried forward for future years.

πŸ’‘ Thinking of buying an investment property?
The purchase date and whether the property is a new build or established property could make a significant difference to your tax position.

Speak with Taxwell Services before making your next property investment decision.

⚠️ Protect Your myGov Account & Tax Refund

Your myGov account contains sensitive personal and tax information. When seeking help with your tax return, make sure you know who you are dealing with.

πŸ” Never share your myGov username, password or authentication codes. A registered tax practitioner does not need to log in to your myGov account as you to provide tax agent services.

βœ… Check the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) Register to confirm your tax practitioner is registered where registration is required.

🚩 Be cautious if someone:

Asks for your myGov login or authentication codes
Promises an unusually large or fast tax refund
Wants to log in to myGov on your behalf

Sharing your login details may put your identity, personal information and tax affairs at risk.

πŸ›‘οΈ Keep your myGov details private. Choose a trusted, appropriately registered tax practitioner. Protect your identity and your refund.
