Most business owners hear from their accountant once a year.

Maybe twice.

A proactive accountant works across your whole year, not just June.

Here's what a full-year engagement actually looks like.

You can usually tell within ten minutes if a client has been burned before.

They come in guarded.
They ask more questions than usual, and they're the kind of questions you ask when you've been stung by the wrong answer.
They're polite but careful.
They've done this before, and it didn't go well.

I've met a lot of clients who arrived that way.
The wariness doesn't go away immediately.

It goes away when you ask the question nobody asked them last time.

When you call back the same day.
When you send them the summary, they were promised and never received.

Trust isn't rebuilt with promises.
It's rebuilt with the small things done consistently.

The reason most new clients come to us through referrals is that the person who referred them already did the trust-building work.

They told their story to someone who asked the right question.
They described the relief of finally having someone in their corner.
And that description meant something to the person listening.

If you've been through a bad accounting relationship, I understand why you're careful.

You should be.

And you should also know that careful doesn't have to mean settling.

Before you commit to any accountant there are five questions worth asking.

Most people never ask them. The answers tell you everything.

Save this before your next conversation with your accountant.

Most people think accountants are interchangeable.
They're not.

Here's the version of accounting most businesses are getting:

🕐 You lodge your BAS.
🕐 You file your return.
🕐 You get a bill.
🕐 Repeat next year.

The accountant processes what you give them.
They return it in the correct format.
They call it done.

Here's the version most businesses don't know they're missing:

✅ You get a call three months before June 30.
✅ Someone asks about the property deal you're considering.
✅ They run two scenarios before you sign anything.
✅ They flag a structure issue before it becomes a problem.
✅ They ask a question the other firm never thought to ask.

The difference between these two versions of accounting isn't price.
It's not software.
It's not even qualifications.

It's whether your accountant treats what you hand them as a task to complete, or a story to understand.

One of our clients faced a $10 million tax bill.
Five other firms had looked at the same file.
We asked the one question they didn't.
The gain was tax-free.

Most accountants process what they're given.
The right one asks what they need to know.

Not all accounting looks the same from the outside.
But the difference shows up every single June.

Reactive accounting waits for the year to finish.
Proactive accounting shapes it before it does.

Almost every new client I meet tells me the same thing about their previous accountant.

Not that the fees were too high.
Not that the numbers were wrong.
But that they couldn't get a call back.

It comes up every time: owner-operated businesses, trades, professionals. Different industries, same story.

"They were hard to get hold of."
"They never told me anything until it was too late."
"I felt like I was bothering them."

That last one is the one that gets me. You should never feel like you're bothering your accountant. You're paying them to know your business. That means they should want to hear from you.

The reason 95% of our new clients come through referrals is not that we're the cheapest. It's because the people who referred them had a different experience.

✅ They got answers.
✅ They got called before the surprises arrived.
✅ They stopped feeling like they were chasing someone who didn't want to be found.

That should be the standard. If your current experience sounds like the first version, not the second, it might be worth having a conversation.

Super has always been quarterly. Until now.

From 1 July, Payday Super changes everything.

If your payroll isn't ready, you'll know about it the hard way.

Don't get caught out. Reach out if you need any help before June 30.

A client came to see us in late July last year.

Good business. Profitable year. But they had a tax bill that felt like a punch.

When we sat down and went through the numbers, there were three things we could have done before 30 June that would have changed that bill.

The frustrating part? None of them were complicated.

Pre-paying an insurance premium. Making a super contribution. Bringing forward a small equipment purchase. Simple things. But the window had closed.

Tax planning isn't about finding loopholes. It's about having a conversation before the year ends, not after.

If you haven't had that conversation yet, June is the time.

Most small business owners pay super once a quarter.

From 1 July 2026, that stops.

Super will need to be paid with every single pay run.
Not quarterly.
Not monthly.
Every pay run.

This is called Payday Super, and it is the biggest change to payroll obligations in over a decade.

Here is what it means in practice:

If you pay staff weekly, super must go in weekly
If you pay fortnightly, super must go in fortnightly
Your payroll system needs to be set up to handle it
Your cash flow needs to account for it

Most small business owners have not heard about this yet.

Some will find out on 1 July when their payroll software flags it.

Others will find out when the ATO comes knocking.

The ones who will be fine are the ones having this conversation now, before the new financial year starts.

If your accountant hasn't raised this with you yet, that's worth a conversation.

30 June is closer than it feels.

The decisions that reduce your tax bill aren't made at year-end. They're made now, in May and June, while there's still time to act.

Here's a plain-English checklist of what you can still do before the window closes.

Print this checklist as a reminder.
