💗 YOUR BOOKKEEPER SHOULDN’T ONLY HEAR FROM YOU WHEN BAS IS DUE.

Bookkeeping works best when it’s happening throughout the year — not when everything has piled up and suddenly needs to be sorted yesterday. 😅

🚨 CAN’T PAY YOUR BAS? DON’T IGNORE IT.

One of the biggest mistakes a business owner can make is putting off lodging their BAS simply because they don’t have the money available to pay it.

Lodging and paying are two separate things.

Your BAS tells the ATO what your business needs to report for the period, which may include GST, PAYG withholding and PAYG instalments.

Even if you can’t pay the amount owing straight away, getting your BAS prepared and lodged on time is still important.

Why?

💗 It keeps your reporting obligations up to date
💗 It establishes what you actually owe
💗 It reduces the risk of failure-to-lodge penalties
💗 It allows you to deal with the debt rather than letting unlodged BAS pile up
💗 It keeps your bookkeeping and ATO records much easier to manage
💗 Even a nil BAS still needs to be lodged when required

And remember — not having the money available doesn’t make the BAS disappear.

The ATO advises businesses to lodge and pay by the due date to avoid penalties and interest. If you’re having difficulty paying, contact the ATO as early as possible to discuss your circumstances and available payment options. (Australian Taxation Office⁠)

The longer things are ignored, the harder it can become to catch up.

If your BAS is approaching and your books aren’t ready — or you have previous periods that need cleaning up — don’t wait until it becomes overwhelming.

💗 Hi, I’m Jazz — the person behind Balanced Books by Jazz.

For those who are new here, I thought it was time I properly introduced myself.

I’m a bookkeeper with 20+ years of experience, but more importantly, I’m someone who genuinely loves helping business owners make sense of the numbers behind their business.

I’ve worked across all sorts of industries over the years — from hospitality, construction and trades to NDIS, not-for-profits, equine businesses, creatives and everything in between. No two businesses are the same, and that’s exactly why I don’t believe bookkeeping should be one-size-fits-all.

I work with Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks, and can help with everything from everyday bookkeeping, reconciliations and payroll through to BAS, clean-ups, catch-ups, reporting and getting your systems running properly.

But Balanced Books by Jazz is about more than ticking boxes and entering transactions.

I’m a mum, I understand how busy life can get, and I know that running a business often means wearing far too many hats. Sometimes you simply need someone you can trust to take one of those hats off your hands.

I’m approachable, straight-talking and definitely not here to judge if your books haven’t been touched for six months. 😅
