Power Tools normally bring out some pretty strong opinions in the horse world 🌏

This is how I use grinders through the summer months.

A power tool used correctly does great things for horses and farriers.

I don’t beleive in forcing a power tool on any horse
If a horse says no then the answer is no.

A fantastic tool that helps us help your horse with the added bonus of reducing repetitive strain injuries for the farrier.

It’s summer 🥵 The hooves have dried out fast!

It’s time to be balming, oiling, conditioning, lubricating whatever you wana call it 3-4 times a week 🤣

The hooves are naturally brittle at this time of year and regular treating with a good quality hoof conditioner will make a serious difference in those brittle breaking off walls.

Hot Works Fire Safety Summer 2026 🔥

This is the ideal set up for keeping everyone safe.

I know that not every client has this so what can you do?

🔥 Spray out and clear dead plant material in a 6m x 4m box this will contain the entire vehicle.

🔥 Lay down conveyer rubber! You’d be surprised how flame retardant that stuff actually is even though it smells a bit when a shoe goes down on it.

🔥 Cold Reset sometimes if it’s not safe enough to hot shoe like there is a total fire ban in place I will cold reset your horse, yeah it not quite as stunning to look out but it is sufficient beleive it or not I actually forward plan for summer and try to get each horse into new steel before Christmas to mitigate the risk.

🔥 Pull the shoes. Every horse needs down time from steel and the Australian summer is a great time for it. No competitions are on, the hoof is nice and dry and hard giving even the thinnest soled TB the best chance at being sound bare! His soft tissue will thank you 💗

Welcome back 💗

Who’s ready for the year of the horse 💗

Looking forward to seeing all the horses it’s time to be oiling hooves a few times a week pretty please 🙏

For those horses that don’t take the grinder please make sure you give their hooves a good soak a few days prior to your appointment not the day of.

The hoof needs time to take the water up and do its thing to release its sole.

Shade is such a thing right now please try and have a shady area ready for work.

Start times are currently earlier due to the heat.

The last of the horses for 2025 are complete!

I will be closed for service from now returning to work on Monday 5th January 2026.

Bookings for that week will be sent by Equinet Friday 2nd January 2026.

One of the most important learnings in horsemanship is when to back off and let the professionals do their job.

Firefly took a rather nasty injury 7 weeks ago and she’s become incredibly defensive with her leg.

It didn’t matter what I tried she wasn’t going to let me near it and I myself was too worried about my own leg to push her too much further.

So we did the twice a week vet visits for bandaging so that under sedation Firefly could be mentally safe from trauma and our treating vets safe from her kicking.

Now it’s time for the bandage to come off but guess what she still won’t let me near it!

Enter Mick from MC Equine - Farrier and training service

Whirly, Firefly and I took a jaunt down to Vasse to see if Mick could take the kick out of Firefly for me and wow he sure did that.

Within no time Firefly was standing calmly unsedated while we cut off the bandage and treated her leg. I got her home tied her up and touched up the spray before putting her back in her paddock.

What did he do that I couldn’t? He did his job as a trainer. Someone who is not emotionally attached to the horse or the issues. He was confident, calm and fair with her the entire way through and she learnt that she didn’t have to be defensive and we weren’t going to hurt her.

Sometimes the hardest thing in the journey is to let go. I was frustrated I couldn’t get this sorted out myself. Hell I stitched Whirly up as a youngster in his paddock with no sedation there where no treating vets in the area.

Learn to recognise when your horse needs professional help. Be it Farriery, Veterinarian Care or Training and step back and let those people do their jobs. Don’t belt yourself up over it just be releived that your horse got what they needed 💗

Incase ya havnt walked outside today!

It is officially summer 🥵 fire safety when working and shade to prevent heat stroke is now number 1 on the hit list.

Hopefully this heat wave will burn off the bush budgies and the horses should all be settling down now the feed is drying off.

This is how easy it is to create a safe level working environment. Super important in our mm precision job!
