2026 Federal Budget: one of the biggest tax shake-ups in decades for many taxpayers.
Key changes affecting business owners, investors and families include:
• 50% CGT discount to end (from 1 July 2027, moving to indexation and a minimum tax rate)
• Instant asset write-off made permanent for small businesses (eligible assets under $20,000)
• Negative gearing changes for future property purchases
• New 30% minimum tax on discretionary trusts (exclusions include primary production income; from 1 July 2028)
• $1,000 instant tax deduction for work expenses (from the 2026–27 financial year)
• $250 Working Australians Tax Offset (from the 2027–28 financial year)
• Superannuation changes from 1 July
• EV FBT concessions are being reduced
A more complete summary is available to download from our website or from the Budget website (links in the comments).
If you own a business, property, or operate through a trust, there’s still time to review your structure and strategy. We’re already working through the implications — please get in touch if you’d like to discuss what this means for you.
