5 Things You Can Do to Not Ruin Your Retirement

1. Adopt a well thought out, long-term investment strategy. Many view volatility of the share market as a reason to avoid it, but volatility just means movement up and down and this is the price paid for higher long-term returns.

2. Understand the pillars of our retirement system, which include your Superannuation, Age Pension entitlements and personal assets, and how each will play its part in your retirement.

3. Control what you can control. You can't always control the exact return from your investments, but you can control the tax effectiveness of your retirement income.

4. Don't ignore inflation in retirement. Assuming you have an income of $50K p.a. today, with inflation of 3%, in 20 years the value of that same $50K would have nearly halved to around $25K.

5. When planning retirement, finances are important but should not always be your top priority. Prioritising your physical and mental health is just as important to a successful and happy retirement.
