FBT year ends March 31. If your business provides cars, entertainment, or other non-cash benefits to employees (including directors), now's the time to get your records in order.

A few things to do before the deadline:

- Record odometer readings for any business vehicles
- Review benefits provided between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026
- Common fringe benefits include motor vehicles, entertainment, short-term loans, and various employee expenses

Not sure if FBT applies to your business? Get in touch with your accountant, or reach out to us and we'll help you figure it out.

Got an SMSF? Two compliance rules trip up more trustees than you would think.

If your fund deals with family or a related business, swipe through. These are the things the ATO looks at first.

Getting it wrong can mean penalties or a higher tax rate on your fund. Better to check now than find out the hard way.

New ATO guidance could mean a huge tax bill on the family home when it gets passed down.

The way your will is worded matters more than most people think. Swipe through to see what has changed and what you can do about it.

If your will is more than a few years old, it is worth getting it looked at.

The ATO issued 84,000+ Director Penalty Notices last year. Up 136%.

If you are a company director, they can hold you personally responsible for unpaid tax and super. Swipe through to see what that means for you.

The short version: lodge on time, even when money is tight. That one step protects you more than most people realise.

Selling (or sold) the family home? If you're 55 or over, you may be able to put up to $300,000 per person into super using the downsizer contribution rules.

A few things that catch people out:
— The home doesn't have to be your main residence at the time of sale
— You don't need a full capital gains tax exemption
— even a partial one qualifies
— A non-owning spouse may still be eligible in certain circumstances
— The contribution must be made within 90 days of settlement

The rules are more flexible than many people realise, but the details matter. If you're thinking about this, it's worth having a conversation with your accountant before settlement.

AI can explain what negative gearing means in seconds. But can it tell you whether it applies to your situation? That's where it gets risky.

A recent Tribunal case found a taxpayer relied on AI to identify supporting legal cases. Some of those cases didn't exist. Others were completely irrelevant. The Tribunal was not impressed.

The ATO has been clear: AI tools can provide false, inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated information. And if your return is wrong, penalties apply regardless of whether the mistake came from ChatGPT or carelessness.

AI is a useful starting point for understanding concepts. But it's not your accountant. When it comes to tax and super decisions, there's no substitute for advice tailored to your actual circumstances.

The Electric Car Discount is under review, but the rules haven't changed yet.
Right now, the FBT exemption alone can save thousands per year on an eligible EV. Add in a higher luxury car tax threshold ($91,387 for fuel-efficient vehicles) and a 5% customs duty waiver, and the numbers become hard to ignore.
The government review won't report until mid-2027, and any changes are expected to be forward-looking. That makes the next 12–24 months a window worth exploring.
If you're considering salary packaging an EV or updating a fleet vehicle, now is a good time to run the numbers with your accountant.
