REMINDER ‼️ Super contribution caps have increased from 1 July 2026.

While the higher caps may create planning opportunities, the rules depend on your total superannuation balance, previous contributions and whether carry forward or bring forward rules may apply.

A new funding opportunity is now open for Australian small businesses.

The Amex Shop Small Grants program is offering 50 grants of up to $20,000 to eligible independently owned businesses, with funding available for initiatives including:

• Business growth or diversification
• Technology and digital upgrades
• Improvements to premises
• Customer experience and accessibility
• Local community projects

The ATO is increasing its focus on how income generated through an individual’s personal skills or efforts is distributed and taxed.

Operating through a company or trust is not necessarily a problem. However, arrangements may attract scrutiny where profits are diverted away from the person who performed the work, particularly where income is split with family members, retained without a genuine commercial purpose, or directed to lower-taxed entities or beneficiaries.

The ATO has provided businesses with an opportunity to review and adjust higher-risk arrangements by 30 June 2027.

If your business income relies largely on your personal skills, efforts or reputation, now is a good time to consider whether your current arrangements would withstand ATO scrutiny.
