𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭.

What started as a team fitness challenge has turned into one very determined climb.

Together, our team has now clocked up 𝟗,𝟏𝟖𝟏 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬 towards our 𝟏𝟎,𝟐𝟏𝟎-𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐌𝐭. 𝐌𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐚 𝐊𝐞𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥.

That means we’re almost 𝟗𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞, with just 𝟏,𝟎𝟐𝟗 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐛.

At this point, there’s no turning back. The legs might be getting tired, but the finish line is looking very tempting.

It’s been a great reminder that big goals rarely happen in one giant leap. They’re built from lots of smaller efforts, consistently added together.

Now it’s time for the final push. Will we make it to the summit? We’re backing the team to get there.

Five months into our team fitness challenge, we've climbed 𝟖,𝟔𝟐𝟑 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬 together. Along the way, we've picked up a few lessons we didn't expect.

𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤. Plenty of us have started a session thinking "just ten minutes" and come back an hour later in a much better mood.

𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞, 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐭. Stair climbs, indoor sessions and a few creative workouts have kept the metres coming in. For some of our team the rain simply means a raincoat or umbrella.

𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧. Some of the biggest weeks have come from people who were inspired by a teammate.

𝐀 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐧. The Ascenders, who’s leading the challenge and the Summit Seekers are just 94 metres apart. Nobody's letting their guard down.

With 𝟏,𝟓𝟖𝟕 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬 left until the summit, we're closer than ever, and we're enjoying the climb more than we thought we would.

🚨 𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘’𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐘: 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝.

From today, 1 October 2026, businesses can no longer charge customers a surcharge when they pay by Visa, Mastercard, American Express or EFTPOS.

For business owners, the surcharge might be gone from your customer's bill.

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝.

According to the RBA, small merchants on single-rate card payment plans pay an average of around 𝟏.𝟒% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐬.

Put that into dollars:

👉 $500,000 in card payments = around $7,000
👉 $2 million = around $28,000
👉 $10 million = around $140,000
👉 $50 million = around $700,000

Suddenly, that “small percentage” doesn't feel quite so small.

So, what should you do?

Depending on your business, it may be worth:

✔️ Reviewing what you're actually paying in merchant fees
✔️ Comparing payment providers and plans
✔️ Considering PayID or other account-to-account payment options
✔️ Reviewing your pricing to ensure these costs aren't quietly eating into your profit

And don't assume you're already getting the best merchant rate. The RBA found small merchants on single-rate plans pay around 1.4% on average, compared with around 0.9% for those on unblended plans.

𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲'𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬.

This is one Xero update we’ve been waiting a very long time for.

Until now, Xero Auto Super relied on one nominated person to authorise your super payments.

But what happens if that person is on holidays? Sick? Or simply unavailable when the payment needs to go through?

It could become a real headache.

Well, Xero has finally changed it.

You can now set up multiple Auto Super authorisers in Xero. 🎉

That means if your usual authoriser isn’t available, another nominated authoriser can step in and approve the super payment.

And just to be clear, this doesn't mean two people have to approve every payment.

You can nominate multiple eligible authorisers, but only one person needs to authorise each super payment.

It’s a simple change, but a really useful one. It gives your business more flexibility, removes the reliance on one person and can help prevent unnecessary delays with your super payments.

So, if your business uses Xero Auto Super, now is a great time to check your setup and consider adding another authoriser.

Because anything that makes payroll and super just that little bit easier gets a big tick from us.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭-𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐟, 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐱 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬?

For our quarterly team function, our team split into four groups and sent everyone out on a photo mission.

The challenge? Complete as many weird, creative and slightly ridiculous photo tasks as possible while exploring the area together, tracking our steps the whole way.

The list covered plenty of ground. We spotted faces in everyday objects, built an emoji from whatever was nearby and squeezed every team member's feet into a single frame. Somewhere between the upside-down photos and the colour hunt, the steps quietly added up.

That showed in this week's numbers. We've now climbed 𝟖,𝟏𝟖𝟕 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬 of our 10,210-metre Mt Mauna Kea goal. That's just over 80% of the way to the summit, with 𝟐,𝟎𝟐𝟑 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬 to go.

The team race couldn't be closer. The Ascenders are on 4,094 metres and the Summit Seekers on 4,093. Only one metre separates them.

And if our photo mission proved anything, it’s that staying active doesn’t always need to feel like a workout.

We’ve been fortunate enough to be nominated in previous years, but for one reason or another, we never took that next step and entered.

This year, we decided it was time to have a go… and we’re very glad we did.

𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝟏 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞.

From 𝟏 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, businesses will no longer be able to charge customers a surcharge for paying by Visa, Mastercard, EFTPOS or American Express.

But here's the important part: your card processing costs aren't disappearing.

At the same time, the RBA is lowering some of the interchange fee caps that form part of the cost of accepting card payments.

From 1 October, the maximum interchange fee will generally be:

💳 Consumer credit cards – 0.30%
💳 Commercial/business credit cards – 0.80%
💳 Debit & prepaid cards – 8 cents per transaction or 0.16%, depending on how the fee is calculated.

These aren't necessarily the fees your bank or payment provider will charge you. Interchange is only ONE part of your overall merchant fee.

Before you simply absorb your existing card fees or increase your prices, ask your payment provider what you will actually be charged from 1 October.

Then look at your numbers.

How much are card fees currently costing your business? How much are you recovering through surcharges? What will you pay from October? And what does that mean for your margins?

This will look different for every business but it's worth doing the maths before the 1 October 2026.

Christie has been a big part of the Wardle Partners Accountants & Advisors team since 1999. During those 27 years Christie has played a significant role in shaping who we are today.
