We are excited to share a new initiative designed to help eligible homeowners aged 60 and over secure their homes by providing financial assistance of up to $10,000 for the installation of important security measures.

This current QLD Government initiative offers financial support to subsidise practical home security improvements, including:

• Strengthening window locks and shutters
• Installing CCTV cameras
• Addressing other security vulnerabilities

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this assistance, applicants must:
• Be homeowners residing in the following local government areas: Townsville, Mount Isa, Cairns, Toowoomba, Tablelands, or Mareeba
• Be aged 60 years or over
• Hold a current Pensioner Concession Card or Veteran Card

Additionally, security improvements must be applied at the applicant's principal place of residence (the home they own and live in). Customers with urgent security needs will be prioritised in the application process.

Would you be surprised to know that every week people call us seeking reassurance and clarity about their eligibility for in-home support.

Often these people are in tears, disbelieving what they've been told by My Aged Care. These elderly people have been struggling and managing alone until someone has suggested they call My Aged Care to see what support they can get.

They've made the call and been told they don't qualify.

So they call us.
We take the time to listen to their story and then we tell them they are eligible and encourage them to try again.

What are the reasons being given by My Aged Care for denying an older person access to support?
❌ You can still shower yourself
❌ You have a carer
❌ You can still cook
❌ You can still drive

⚠️ Sponging oneself at the bathroom sink twice a week is not showering.
⚠️ Having a family member who supports their older loved one actually indicates a level of need, it doesn't exclude someone from being eligible.
⚠️ Making a piece of toast doesn't constitute a meal.
⚠️ When there's no public transport and a taxi is too expensive, older people don't have a choice and will continue to drive because there is no other option.

Being a former ACAT assessor, I know that these people are sitting at ACAT level and would be eligible for a home care package.

Yvette and her sister didn't know which way to turn to get support for their beautiful parents.

There was a lot going on with Yvette's parents. Both daughters were providing a lot of support and recognised it was time to engage formal assistance but had no idea where or how to start. They'd heard about the complexities of My Aged Care and wanted support and guidance to get into and through the system with as little delay as possible.

We assessed both Yvette's parents and submitted our detailed reports attached to the My Aged Care referral. Both Yvette's parents were approved for the Short-Term Restorative Care program and Home Care Packages.
