Today marks the anniversary of the 2008 apology to the Stolen Generations. A moment to reflect on what that apology acknowledged. The harm caused by forced removals. The disruption to family, culture, language, and identity. The effects that continue across generations.

Words matter, and so does what follows them.

Organisations like Link-Up Queensland continue supporting Stolen Generations survivors and their families through reunions, records access, and healing services. This work is ongoing and deserves sustained attention and support.

For those in Brisbane, there's a National Apology Day event at QPAC today. Coming together to listen and reflect can be a meaningful way to acknowledge the day. Find out more information about it at https://link-upqld.org.au/apology2026/

Respect is shown through consistency. Through learning, listening, and supporting the work that continues long after formal apologies are made.

I will be speaking at the Accounting & Business Expo in March.

Country, Culture & Cashflow: Indigenous Storytelling for Accountants
📅 19 March 2026
🕜 1:30 pm AEDT

Indigenous storytelling teaches that knowledge becomes meaningful when it’s shared with context, connection, and purpose.

Accounting carries the same responsibility. Numbers alone don’t guide decisions. Understanding what they mean, how they connect, and how they’re communicated is what builds trust and confidence.

In this session, I will explore how storytelling principles rooted in Aboriginal knowledge systems can support clearer communication and stronger advisory conversations, particularly in SME environments.

If you’re planning to be there, I’d love to see you in the room. You can apply for a guest pass here: https://secure.terrapinn.com/V5/sponsor-guest/11019/a0AN200000a1TC3MAM

February is the perfect time to pause and look at how your year is tracking.

For many business owners, this is when early tax planning conversations begin. A tax planning session gives you a clear view of your business' performance so far, help you understand what the numbers are telling you, and prepares you for important decisions ahead.

We’ll be sharing more about tax planning and how we approach it as we move closer to March.

I’ll be speaking at the Accounting & Business Expo in Sydney in March about Indigenous Business – The Sleeping Giant and How Accountants Can Help

Indigenous businesses are a growing part of Australia’s economy, yet many still don’t get the advisory support they need to grow with confidence.

I’ll be sharing what I see working in practice, where accountants can do better, and how advisory support can play a more meaningful role for Indigenous business owners.

The session is shaped by my own experience working alongside Indigenous businesses and communities, and what I’ve learned from those relationships over time.

If you’re attending the Expo, I’ll see you there.

February can feel a little quieter after January, but there are still a few dates worth marking on your calendar. Here's what's coming up for most small businesses this month:

21 February → January monthly BAS due

28 February → If you report GST quarterly, your October–December BAS is due

28 February → Due date to pay if you’ve received an instalment notice (form R, S or T). You only need to lodge it if you’re varying the instalment amount.

28 February → Due date to lodge and pay Superannuation guarantee charge (SGC) statement. This applies if super contributions weren't paid in full or on time for the quarter.

Staying on top of these obligations helps keep March and EOFY far more manageable.

January was a full month, both professionally and personally.

Being admitted as a Fellow Chartered Accountant was a big professional milestone for me. It’s something I’ve worked towards over a long period of time, and I’m proud of the path that led here.

Outside of work, the month was centred around family. Organising play dates for my son, spending time together, and supporting him through big changes.

His first day at school was a big one. Exciting, emotional, and a little surreal. One of those reminders that time really does move quickly.

That’s January for me. Work, family, and everything that comes with it.

What moments stood out for you this month?

We include an Annual Accounts Review meeting in our business tax return process because it gives us time to properly talk through your results together.
For a lot of business owners, tax time comes and goes quickly. The return is prepared, signed, lodged, and stored. The numbers are there, but the story behind them is rarely explained.

The review meeting is a chance to sit down and go through the results. We talk about what stood out, what changed over the year, and how the results line up with how the year felt running the business. The focus is on clarity and understanding, using plain language.

Our aim is that you leave the meeting with a clearer picture of where your business sits and a better understanding of your numbers going into the year ahead.

26 January is not a date we celebrate.

For First Nations people, this day represents survival and the beginning of ongoing dispossession that is still felt today. Each year, the conversation around this date shows how much awareness and understanding is still needed.

As an Indigenous business, this is not a day we celebrate. It is a day to acknowledge history, listen to lived experience, and reflect on how we move forward with respect.

If you would like to learn more about why this date is not a celebration for everyone, we encourage you to read this article by Clothing the Gaps:
https://www.clothingthegaps.com.au/pages/not-a-date-to-celebrate

Clothing the Gaps also support a petition calling for change and greater recognition of the impact this date holds for First Nations people:
https://www.change.org/p/australia-day-jan-26-not-a-date-to-celebrate

We share this to support understanding and learning, and to amplify First Nations voices.

Quick reminder for employers: December quarter super (Oct–Dec) is due 28 January, and it needs to be received by your employee’s super fund by that date (not just processed on your end).

Make sure you allow a little extra time for processing so it lands on time.

Also worth planning ahead: Payday Super starts 1 July 2026. This means super will need to be paid on payday, at the same time as wages, instead of quarterly. Would like to know more of have any questions? Reach out at https://bit.ly/3xhCkRy
