You’re buying the business. But how much of its success belongs to the person selling it?

Perhaps customers deal exclusively with the owner. Maybe they do the quoting, manage the team and work weekends without paying themselves a realistic wage. Those details are incredibly important when you’re assessing how the business might perform under your ownership.

Before purchasing, it’s worth understanding what it would cost to replace that work, whether key customer relationships are likely to continue and how those changes could affect profitability.

At Spark, we help buyers look beyond the advertised figures to assess business performance and financial risks. If you’re considering a purchase, speak with us about due diligence before you commit.

If BAS time arrives and you’re always wondering where the money is going to come from… it might be time to change the system.

Tax obligations should be something your business plans for, rather than something that creates panic every quarter. Need a simple habit?

Regularly set aside money for upcoming tax obligations instead of treating everything sitting in the business account as available cash. It's not.

Future you will be very grateful. 😉

And if you’re never quite sure how much you should be putting aside, have the conversation with your accountant.

If this year has taught us anything, it's that businesses need to change quickly. Costs increase. Teams grow. Systems get stretched. What worked perfectly two years ago might be quietly holding you back today.

That might be your pricing, the way you quote jobs, how you manage cash flow, how you track profitability or even how decisions are being made.

The problem is that outdated systems often don’t feel broken. They just become less effective over time.

Sometimes the biggest improvements in a business don’t come from doing more. They come from looking at what you’re already doing and asking whether it still makes sense.

A job might technically make money and still not be worth doing.

Maybe the margin was too thin. Maybe it ran weeks over schedule. Maybe there were endless variations, rework or delays. Maybe it tied up cash for months before you were paid.

Looking only at whether a job made a profit can hide the bigger picture.

For builders and trades, it’s worth asking whether the return justified the time, risk and resources involved.

The best jobs aren’t always the biggest ones. They’re the ones that make sense commercially. Our team can help you discover which projects trend towards profitable and ultimately "worth it".

One great month can make you feel richer than you are. You know the feeling when a big month comes in and suddenly everything feels easier? There’s more cash in the account, the pressure lifts, and spending that felt risky a few weeks ago starts to feel completely reasonable.

That’s often when businesses take on new fixed costs, especially in the lead up to the Christmas rush.

The problem is that one strong month doesn’t always represent the normal rhythm of the business. If the next month is quieter, those new expenses don’t disappear.

Before increasing overheads, look at the trend rather than the high point. Good decisions are made from patterns, not peaks. Talk to our team at Spark Accountants to get help identifying your business trends more effectively.

It sounds promising. But that number alone doesn't tell us much.

Was that profit achieved consistently, or was last year unusually strong? Is one customer responsible for a large percentage of revenue? Has the owner been paying themselves a commercial wage? Are there expenses that will increase once you take over? Is important equipment about to need replacing? And does the cash flow actually support the profit being reported?

When you’re considering buying a business, the interesting questions usually start after you’ve seen the profit figure.

Good due diligence is about understanding the story behind the financials, including what is repeatable, what is unusual and what might change once the current owner walks away.

At Spark Accountants, we help buyers work through those questions before they make one of the biggest financial commitments of their lives.

A good-looking set of accounts should be the start of your investigation, not the end of it.

A full calendar, packed pipeline and team working at capacity can look like success from the outside. But busy doesn’t automatically mean profitable.

We see businesses take on more work, add staff and turn over more money, only to find that margins have quietly shrunk in the background. Materials increase, labour blows out, jobs run over, and suddenly everyone is working harder for less.

The question isn’t simply, “How much work do we have?”

It’s, “Is this work actually making us money?”

Growth is only useful if the numbers underneath it are healthy.

A little reminder for every small business owner… You don’t need to have all the financial answers yourself.

You started your business because you’re great at what you do. Not because you dreamed of spending your evenings analysing reports, researching tax rules and wondering whether your figures look right. 😅

Having the right people around you means you can spend more time doing the work that moves your business forward; while still knowing exactly where you stand financially.

That’s the kind of relationship we aim to build with our clients at Spark.

Ask yourself three things:

1. Can the business afford it? Not just today, but after upcoming wages, BAS, tax and supplier payments.

2. What return should it generate? Will it genuinely improve productivity, capacity or profitability?

3. What happens if revenue is lower than expected? Would the business still have enough breathing room?

Good business decisions become much easier when you have a clear view of your cash flow and forecasts. We don't think you goal should be to avoid spending. It’s to spend with confidence.

A business can look incredibly attractive from the outside. Strong revenue, an established customer base, a good reputation and plenty of opportunity for growth.

But before you sign anything, you need to know whether the financial reality matches the sales pitch.

Are the profits sustainable? Has revenue been consistent? Is the business carrying debt or other liabilities? Are there unusual expenses that have been removed to make the figures look stronger? Is cash flow healthy? And are there risks that could become your problem the moment settlement occurs?

This is where financial due diligence becomes so important.

At Spark Accountants, we work with buyers to examine the financial position and performance of a business before they commit. We look beyond the headline figures, identify areas that warrant further investigation and help you understand what you’re actually buying.

Because once you own the business, you own the problems too.

Doing the homework before you buy can be one of the most valuable investments you make.
