As businesses grow, their operational footprint expands. Employees, contractors, cloud platforms and outsourced providers may all require access to business systems and client information. Each new relationship introduces security considerations that need to be managed deliberately.

The challenge is not simply preventing unauthorised access. It is ensuring that access remains appropriate, traceable and accountable throughout the relationship.

The Australian Signals Directorate’s Information Security Manual (ISM) identifies several important considerations for organisations engaging external service providers:

- Supplier risk and jurisdiction: Assess the privacy, governance, security and jurisdictional risks associated with suppliers, including where services are delivered and where data is processed or stored.
- Controlled and monitored access: Apply appropriate access restrictions, multi-factor authentication and independent logging to help detect unexpected or unauthorised activity.
- Defined responsibilities: Document security obligations between the business and its providers, including how data is protected, incidents are reported, and compliance is verified.
- Ongoing oversight: Review supplier security arrangements as services, systems and risks change. Access and contractual obligations should remain appropriate throughout the engagement and after it ends.

These principles highlight an important governance question: are your security controls evolving at the same pace as your business?

Review who can access sensitive information, which systems and devices they use, how external access is monitored, and how permissions are revoked when roles or contracts end. For third-party providers, ensure responsibilities and access arrangements are clearly documented and regularly reviewed.

Growth creates new opportunities, but it also expands the responsibility to protect business and client information.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬

On 8 October, our accounting interns, Novah, Kim and Dinushan, presented their projects to the Tailored Accounts team, sharing their ideas, learnings and contributions from their time with us.

Kim’s presentation was especially memorable, bringing a level of energy and humour that Harry described as one of the most exciting and fun intern presentations we have ever had. As Kim’s internship comes to an end, she reflected on more than the technical skills she gained in Xero, Dext and other accounting software.

That is what we hope an internship offers: practical experience, personal growth, and the confidence to contribute.

For Australian businesses, payroll, superannuation, STP, tax obligations, ATO guidance and reporting requirements do not operate in isolation. They overlap, change over time, and often require judgement about how a rule applies to a particular business situation.

That is why Australian knowledge matters.

The value is not simply in knowing that a regulation exists, but in recognising when a change affects the client, how different obligations interact, when something looks unusual, and when an issue should be escalated for specialist advice. The same applies beyond compliance: forecasting, budgeting and advisory work are more useful when the accountant understands the commercial environment behind the numbers.

But knowledge alone is not enough.

Good accounting also depends on the structure behind the work: documented processes, review mechanisms, clear escalation pathways, continuity when staff change, appropriate supervision and a clear point of responsibility for the final outcome.

That distinction matters because a transaction can be processed correctly while still being accounted for incorrectly. A reconciliation can balance and still conceal a problem. Getting work completed is therefore not the same as having a system designed to identify, question and resolve what sits behind the numbers.
