Post the service we will head to Blackburn Baseball Club for the wake which all are welcome to attend.
As we are expecting a large crowd, parking might be annoying. The venue has advised it best to car pool/uber or allow enough time to park in the bushes and walk across.

VALE PAUL TIERNEY

We are very sad to announce the passing of Paul “Bluey” Tierney, who unfortunately left us peacefully yesterday aged 76 after a few months of battling ill health, surrounded by family.

Paul, along with Garry and Don Charman, were highly regarded as great accountants in the hospitality industry, later being joined by Neil and Peter Johnston to form Charman Tierney and Associates. In 1998 they merged with Mark Barson and Wayne Goodwin to form the Charman Partners it is today, with over 100 years of history.

He is fondly remembered by all of us as being a kind and compassionate accountant, who put client’s interests ahead of his own. He treated his profession with the utmost respect, ensuring he was able to provide the best advice to his clients by staying abreast of all the changes the government and the industry would throw at him. He developed great rapport with clients and staff alike, enjoyed a b**r or two with everyone, and was a wonderful influence in the office – an influence still remembered today.

Funeral details will be shared in the next few days. Rest well, Bluey.

Why does my refund look a bit different this year?!

Australians are currently in the grip of a cost-of-living crisis which is affecting nearly everyone. Now that the 2023 financial year is over, many are looking to their tax refunds to help them get by. But upon lodgement, it's a bit shorter than last year - and nothing changed. Why?!

Even though we'll continue to make sure you claim as much as you are allowed, refunds are down this year for one simple reason - the removal of the low and middle income earner tax offsets.

For certain tax payers between $37,000 and $126,000 of taxable income, this was an extra offset that helped reduce your tax payable or increased your tax refund. It was claimed at the end of the year instead of in your regular pay packet, so tax refunds have been (largely) quite a nice surprise from 2019 to 2022.

Along with restrictions to the work-from-home deduction rules, we are certainly finding that our clients in general have received lower refunds. Be assured we will always work to get you the best result!

VALE JOHN BARSON

The Charman Partners family wish to acknowledge the death of John Barson who passed away on 24th May 2023 at the age of 94. John worked with Johnson Barson & Co, a precedent firm to Charman Partners, for over 41 years and was a Partner in the firm from 1957 until he retired from the practice in 1988. Despite leaving the practice he continued to look after the accounting and tax needs of many friends and clients for a further 28 years. John possessed a wealth of knowledge which he was always happy to share with his colleagues and his friendly and engaging manner was appreciated by many.
