Most instant asset write-off mistakes aren't about eligibility. They're about one date most business owners don't check.

It's not when you paid. Not when it was delivered. There's a specific point that decides whether an asset counts for this year's return or gets pushed into the next one, and it's easy to get wrong.

We've broken down exactly what the ATO looks for here:

The biggest delay in tax time usually isn't the tax return itself. It's finding everything that goes into it.

Before you sit down to lodge, it helps to have income statements, bank and investment interest, private health insurance details, and receipts for any deductions ready in one place.

If you've used a car, a home office, or bought tools for work this year, add logbooks or usage records to that pile too.

The tidier the paperwork, the faster (and more accurate) the return.

We can talk you through exactly what applies to your situation. Comment below or send us a message.

MyTax is open, but here's a tip: lodging on day one usually isn't a good idea.

Your employer income statement won't be marked "tax ready" until mid-July, and bank interest, dividends and trust distributions can take until August to show up.

Have you already lodged, or are you waiting it out this year? Let us know below 👇

Paying super quarterly is about to change for every employer in Australia.

From 1 July 2026, employers need to pay superannuation at the same time as wages, rather than quarterly. Contributions generally need to reach an employee's super fund within 7 business days of payday.

This is a real shift in cash flow timing and payroll process, not just a paperwork update.

Worth checking now: does your payroll software support the new timing? Is your super clearing house set up to process faster?

If you're not sure if you're ready for Payday Super, get in touch and we'll take a look.

30 June is two weeks away, and there's more to sort than most people realise.

- Payday super kicks in 1 July.
- The ATO is watching rental deductions closely.
- Social media tax tips are landing people in trouble.
- And the Small Business Super Clearing House closes for good on 30 June.

Here's a plain-English rundown of what to check before the end of the financial year. 👇

Made a mistake on your FBT return? Good news, it's usually fixable.

Fringe Benefits Tax is one of those areas where even careful, well-run businesses can get caught out. A misclassified expense, a missed exemption, an overlooked benefit; it happens more than you'd think.

If you catch the error before lodging, you can often correct it and avoid unnecessary tax altogether.

If you find it after lodgement, you generally have up to three years to amend, as long as you have the records to back it up.

The key is not to sit on it.

The earlier you act, the more options you have and the lower the risk of penalties down the track.

Our team at Clarity Taxation works through FBT reviews regularly. If something doesn't look right, we can help you work out whether it's an issue and what to do about it.

Did you know that unpaid tax debt can do more than drain your bank account, it could actually put your career at risk?

For professionals in regulated industries — think accountants, lawyers, financial advisers, mortgage brokers, and healthcare workers — a significant unresolved tax debt can attract attention from licensing bodies.

We're talking restrictions on your practice, required disclosures, or in serious cases, suspension of your licence.

We've written a plain-English guide covering what licensing bodies can do, what the ATO can do, and most importantly, how to protect yourself.

Worth a read if this is something you've been putting off. 👇

Planning a holiday?

Before you pack your bags, make sure your tax affairs are in order.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) can issue a Departure Prohibition Order (DPO) that prevents individuals with significant unpaid tax or superannuation debts from leaving Australia.

With more than $50 billion in outstanding tax debt, the ATO is increasingly using this power to enforce compliance.

Unresolved tax debts can result in unexpected travel disruption, including being stopped from boarding an international flight.

Small business owners, please be careful.

The ATO has flagged barter credit donation schemes as a compliance risk.

These arrangements often promise:

âś” Large tax deductions
âś” Minimal cash outlay
✔ “Guaranteed” tax savings

But if the deduction claimed is higher than what you actually paid, you could face:

➡️ Audits
➡️ Repayment of the deduction
➡️ Interest and penalties
➡️ Possible legal consequences

Even participating unknowingly does not protect you.

Owing tax doesn’t mean you’ve failed — but ignoring it can make things much worse.

ATO tax debt can grow quickly through interest, penalties and missed lodgements. The good news? Early action opens up options like payment plans that actually fit your cash flow.

The right steps now can:

âś… Stop the debt from escalating
âś… Reduce stress and uncertainty
âś… Protect your business from recovery action
âś… Help you stay compliant going forward
