When farming families talk about growth, the conversation often starts with buying the place next door.

But sometimes the biggest opportunities aren't found in more acreage. They're found in improving what you already have.

Recently, I worked with a farming family who chose to invest in an automatic feeding system rather than taking on more debt and more land.

The outcome?

✔️ Greater efficiency
✔️ Increased turnover
✔️ Capacity to turn over an additional 150 head every three months

This is proof that the best growth strategies aren't always about getting bigger. Often they're about getting better.

What improvements have made the biggest difference on your farm?

For many farming families, succession planning is something that's always important, but rarely urgent.

There always another season, another project, another reason to push the conversation down the road. That's why the news of the 26-27 Federal Budget is so important.

From 1 July 2027, changes to Capital Gains Tax will come into effect, creating a defined 14-month window for families to review succession plans, ownership structures and future asset transfers.

For some, that may feel like another layer of complexity in an already complicated process, which is understandable.

For families who have been putting succession conversations on the back burner, this may be the nudge needed to start talking about what comes next.

I always say to my clients that the best outcomes usually come from having enough time to explore your options rather than reacting to a deadline.

If succession has been sitting on the "we'll get to it one day" list, this Budget may have just given you a reason to bring the conversation forward.

The biggest challenge in farm transition is often uncertainty.

• How do you make it fair?
• How do mum and dad stay financially secure?
• How do you keep the farm moving forward and the family together?

Hear it from our clients: the Farm Transition Blueprint helps create clarity, options and a path forward that works.

Late last year, I joined Daniher's Drive – a four-day journey through regional Victoria, raising funds and awareness for FightMND.

Motor Neurone Disease is a cause that's personal to me, so being part of this event meant more than I can put into words.

What struck me most wasn't just the fundraising – it was the people. The stories shared, the communities we visited, and the sense that we were all part of something bigger than ourselves.

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared their stories, and attended the Blue Denim Disco at the Bolt Inn in Uralla.

I recently spent a week on the road in Victoria visiting clients, catching up with old friends & family, and stopping by my old stomping ground at Marcus Oldham.

Most of our work happens over Zoom, and that works really well for many families. It gives people flexibility, keeps things moving, and means we can stay connected no matter where everyone is.

That said, this trip was a good reminder that there’s also real value in meeting face to face – getting to see the farms and meet the people we’re working with in person.

During the week, I asked a few families how things were feeling before and after working through the Farm Transition Blueprint. A few of the responses really stayed with me:

“We used to feel uncertain — now we have a plan.”
“We’d been stuck for years — now things feel fair.”
“Mum and Dad feel better knowing retirement is clearer now.”

These comments are a reminder that succession planning is about more than just numbers. It’s about creating clarity, easing pressure, and helping families move forward together. It's also the why behind why I love what I do.

Thanks so much to everyone who invited me into their homes, onto their farms, and into the conversations that matter. I really appreciated the time, trust and hospitality.

EOFY is almost here.

Before you rush to get everything to your accountant, take a moment to ask yourself:

→ Am I just minimising tax, or am I building long-term wealth?
→ Is my structure still right for where my farm is heading?
→ What conversations have I been putting off?

These aren't questions your accountant will always ask, but they're the ones that matter most.

Our latest blog walks through what farmers should be reviewing before June 30 – and why it's about more than just tax.

A vital part of succession planning is ensuring the outgoing generation has a secure, sustainable retirement.

For many farmers, the property provides income, housing, and identity. Without a clear retirement plan, the transition can stall, or create financial pressure for the next generation.

A strong plan might include:
• Defined income arrangements
• Superannuation or off‑farm investments
• Clear timelines for stepping back
• Housing options that support independence

When the retiring generation feels secure, the entire family moves forward with confidence. We unpack this in our latest blog. read it here: https://lifesolver.com.au/uncategorized/succession-readiness-for-farming-families

Families often discuss the future but don’t finish the plan. The Farm Transition Blueprint turns conversation into a concrete, written roadmap with a 90-day action calendar and clear ownership.

Which part of transitioning your farm feels hardest to finalise?

1. Ownership
2. Finances
3. Next-gen readiness?

Harvest changes the rhythm of everything.

Decisions become immediate, hours get longer, and planning tends to narrow to what needs doing right now.
That’s normal, and it’s why long-term planning often stalls at this time of year.

But once the headers stop and the pressure eases, it’s worth taking a step back to look at where things are heading.

Many families use the post-harvest window to:
• review goals
• assess the viability of the current business structure
• check whether retirement and transition plans still fit
• discuss what the next generation wants their roles to look like

You don’t need a full succession plan: just a clearer view of the direction you’re heading in.
