The Government's latest SMSF reforms have put a big spotlight on something we have been saying for years: be very careful when the person encouraging you to establish an SMSF is also trying to sell you the investment!
The reforms specifically target harmful lead generation and unlicensed real time communications about super following significant losses suffered by Australians in recent investment collapses.
SMSFs can be fantastic structures for the right people, but the decision to establish one should start with your retirement goals and circumstances, not because someone on the phone has an investment they want you to buy.
If the SMSF and the investment are being sold to you as one package, that's a pretty good reason to slow down and get some independent advice first.
