If you're like any one of 340 million Americans, you may have the same lingering stress in the back of your mind; debt. Whether it’s credit card debt, student loans, medical bills, etc. Becoming free of any form of debt can bring a long awaited sense of relief.
At least it did for me when I finished paying off 70k in student debt 7 years ago.
Here are the three strategies I used to get out of debt and take back control of my finances.
First, take a close look at your spending habits. For me, online shopping was an easy way for me to cut back on some of my unnecessary spending and start making larger debt payments. For you it might be the daily Starbucks Chai Tea Latte. Maybe you’re seeing Amazon a little too often on your credit card statement. No matter where you cut back, the important thing is that you do. That money saved can make a big difference over time.
Second, consider consolidating your debts into one monthly payment. This can often be done through a personal loan or a balance transfer credit card. If used correctly, these tools can be wildly helpful! By consolidating your debts, you'll simplify your monthly finances and be less likely to miss a payment.
P.S. Sometimes you might even be able to secure a lower interest rate, to the tune of 3% one time vs. 23% compounding monthly!
Lastly, make a plan! Having a specific plan for getting out of debt will help to keep you motivated and on track. Take the time to map out when you'll make each payment and set up autopay so you never miss a payment. It might not be easy at first but I know you can stick to it!
Debt can be a major stressor in anyone's life. But don't worry, I'm here to help! These three tips will get you on track to becoming debt free in no time. Just remember to cut back on unnecessary spending, consolidate your debts and make a plan!
