Tax penalties can feel like dragging a ball and chain. They may happen even when you’ve done your best to comply with tax law. Don’t panic. Penalty relief may be available. For example, if you suffered a serious illness, were a victim of a natural disaster, or relied on bad advice from the IRS, you may qualify for penalty abatement. A penalty may arise from actions such as filing late, making a late tax payment or missing a deposit. If you receive an IRS notice that you think is incorrect or unjust, you don’t have to tackle it alone. Contact us at (734) 778-8429 for help with this matter.

Projecting your business’s income for this year and next can allow you to time income and deductible expenses to your tax advantage. Unfortunately, controlling such timing can be more challenging for accrual-basis taxpayers than for cash-basis ones. But accrual-basis taxpayers also have some unique opportunities. For example, if they properly record and recognize expenses incurred in 2025 but that won’t be paid until 2026, those expenses can be deducted on the 2025 income tax return, reducing 2025 tax. Common examples include commissions, wages, payroll taxes, advertising, interest, utilities, insurance and property tax. Call us at (734) 778-8429 to discuss more year-end tax planning strategies.

Productivity metrics give business owners a clear view of how effectively they’re using time, talent and capital. Common examples include revenue per employee, output per hour worked, utilization rate and customer satisfaction scores. Choosing the right metrics and tracking them consistently over appropriate intervals allows you to identify inefficiencies, streamline operations and align employee performance with strategic objectives. For small companies, simple spreadsheets may be adequate. But don’t overlook more sophisticated tech solutions, such as digital dashboards and project management platforms. Contact us at (734) 778-8429 to start leveraging productivity metrics that help your business thrive.

If you own a life insurance policy, a portion of its proceeds could be lost to estate tax if your estate exceeds the gift and estate tax exemption amount. If you don’t own the policy, the proceeds won’t be included in your taxable estate. Using an irrevocable life insurance trust (ILIT) can keep life insurance policies out of your estate. An ILIT owns one or more policies on your life, and it manages and distributes policy proceeds according to your wishes. You aren’t allowed to retain any powers over the policy, such as the right to change the beneficiary. Contact us at (734) 778-8429 for details.

Now is a good time to review your business’s expenses for deductibility. Accelerating certain expenses into this year will reduce 2025 taxes and might even provide permanent tax savings. There’s no master list of deductible business expenses in the federal tax code. Some deductions are expressly authorized or excluded, but most are governed by the general rule that businesses can deduct their “ordinary and necessary” expenses. Understanding what’s deductible and what’s not isn’t easy. We can review your current expenses and help determine whether accelerating expenses into 2025 makes sense for your business. Contact us at (734) 778-8429 to discuss year-end tax planning and to start strategizing for 2026.

Business owners: Staying compliant with payroll taxes is essential to avoiding penalties. Regularly review your key responsibilities. These include: 1) Federal taxes, which must be withheld based on wages and information provided on employees’ Forms W-4. 2) State and local taxes, which vary based on the specifics in your area. 3) F**A taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. 4) FUTA taxes, which help states pay employees who’ve been involuntarily terminated. 5) Additional Medicare tax, which applies to higher-income earners. 6) State unemployment obligations, which also vary based on each state’s unemployment program. Contact us at (734) 778-8429 for help assessing and improving your payroll processes.

College costs like tuition, books, computers and, generally, room and board have long qualified for tax-free 529 plan withdrawals, with no annual limit. For elementary and secondary school expenses, the limit has been $10,000 per year per student, with only tuition qualifying. Starting with expenses incurred after July 4, 2025, additional K–12 expenses like books and instructional materials also qualify, with the cap increasing to $20,000 per year in 2026. Also effective after July 4, 2025, certain credentialing programs qualify. Call us at (734) 778-8429 to discuss how to make the most of 529 plans.

Have you made improvements to business real estate? You may be eligible for tax breaks for qualified improvement property (QIP). QIP includes any improvement to an interior portion of a nonresidential building that’s placed in service after the date the building was placed in service. QIP can be depreciated over 15 years (rather than 39). It’s also eligible for bonus depreciation and Sec. 179 expensing, which have been enhanced for 2025 and beyond. While maximizing first-year depreciation can be beneficial, sometimes spreading out depreciation deductions over multiple years can be better, such as if you’re in a higher tax bracket in the future. We can help you determine what’s best for you. Call us at (734) 778-8429.

For cash-based businesses, meticulous recordkeeping is essential. Because cash transactions are harder to verify, they increase the risk of underreporting income and attracting IRS scrutiny. The IRS closely monitors such businesses, using tools like cash flow analysis, bank deposit comparisons and lifestyle audits to estimate actual income. If discrepancies arise, the IRS may calculate your income based on estimates, potentially resulting in higher taxes than necessary. Contact us for help with your business at (734) 778-8429.
