Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department

Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department Remember to always call 911 in an emergency. This is OWL's Official page. We welcome your positive comments. Thank you for your support.

In September 1938, the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department, was officially incorporated. It was two years of hard work for a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need for a Fire Department in the area. Many of them put up personal property and their own money to secure loans to build a building to house the apparatus and start the department. Sometimes they had to "pass

the hat" to pay electric and other bills monthly. Before OWL VFD the closest Fire Department’'s were in Pen Daw (Fairfax Station 11) to the north, Manassas to the west and Fredericksburg to the south. The first station was in the Town of Occoquan on the corner of Washington and Mill Street, which was Station 2 in PWC. You can still see the concrete pad where it was located. From there they built a building that is now the VFW in Occoquan. In 1958 they opened a second Station on Jeff Davis Hwy. They were numbered Station 2-1 in Occoquan and Station 2-2 on Jefferson Davis Highway. From there, OWL moved to the current Station 2 on F Street, opened up the Lake Ridge Station 14, and the Route 1 station, 12, relocated to Montgomery Avenue. OWL VFD’s continued success is because of the foresight and hard work of those who built the foundation and the dedication and commitment of our members who serve today. Even from our humble beginnings, OWL VFD has historically strategically planned for disaster events, keeping up on the latest training, equipment and education available. OWL VFD invests thousands of hours in professional training and certification courses. Our care and dedication to Fire and Rescue is reflected in our efforts of staying up to date and ready for the task. OWL VFD is one of the largest and busiest volunteer fire departments in the United States with over 200 members. OWL VFD provides fire suppression, EMS care, and rescue services to 80,000 residents in our 27 square mile area through the operation of three fire stations. OWL volunteer Firefighters and EMTs work the 6 pm to 6 am shift, five days a week, plus 24/7 holidays and weekends.

Did you know firefighters are expected to don their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) in under two minutes?

When dispatched for a call, crews begin gearing up immediately. They step into their boots with bunker pants pre-staged inside, pulling them up and securing the suspenders over their shoulders in one fluid motion. A protective hood is placed around the neck, followed by a bunker coat that is fastened and secured at the collar—all before even climbing onto the apparatus.

While en route, firefighters secure their SCBA tank (stored in their seat) and complete their ensemble by pulling up their hood and putting on their helmet and gloves.

By the time they arrive on scene, they are fully equipped and ready to work.

Our members regularly practice these skills through timed dressing drills. Gear is carefully laid out on the bay floor, and they practice suiting up.

Frequent practice of donning PPE and SCBA is a critical part of ongoing training—ensuring our crews remain efficient.

🌞Yesterday, we enjoyed beautiful weather as we joined Potomac View Elementary in celebrating its history. Located on Lamar Road, the school has proudly served students since opening its doors in 1964.

OWL’s Public Education team, along with the Ambulance 502 crew, Engine 502, and Medic 502, were honored to attend and take part in this special event. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community and celebrate this school.

For many years, OWL has proudly supported the Tunnel to Towers Prince William 5K/1-Mile Walk & Run by providing EMS standby and participating in this meaningful event.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation supports several incredible programs, including the Gold Star Family Home Program—honoring the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice by providing mortgage-free homes to surviving spouses with young children.

Recently, the foundation paid off the mortgage for the family of United States Marine Corps Sgt. Cory Orel, who passed away on July 4, 2025, from service-connected cancer linked to occupational exposure.

Sgt. Orel dedicated his life to serving others. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, determined to serve “with the best,” and honorably served for four and a half years. Following active duty, he attended the Fire Academy in Prince William County and served with Prince William County Fire and Rescue for three years before reenlistment in the Marine Corps took him to Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, where he served as a Crash Fire Rescue Supervisor. For 19 years, he served with Camp Lejeune Fire and Emergency Services as a firefighter and paramedic before medically retiring as a Captain in 2021.

We honor Sgt. Orel’s life of service and sacrifice, and extend our deepest gratitude to organizations like Tunnel to Towers for supporting families who carry on their loved ones’ legacy.

Several of our members gathered at our Logistics Center today to prepare our former Wagon 514 for the funeral of OWL Life Member Danny Thompson.

Now privately owned by former member Ken Bacon, Wagon 514 holds special meaning for many of us. We are truly grateful to Ken for allowing us to borrow it for this meaningful tribute.

🚑National EMS Week - EMS Remembrance Day 🚑

We celebrate the life of Claude Greene, who was OWL's first line-of-duty death. Greene was a resident of the Town of Occoquan, and as a member of OWL, he served mainly as an Ambulance Driver. After transporting a patient to Fort Belvoir Hospital, Greene suffered a heart attack.

In 1977, OWL honored Greene's memory by establishing the Claude M. Greene EMS Valor Award. The award is presented to a member or members of OWL who have performed an act of heroism while providing EMS service. This award recognizes individual achievement or meritorious action by department members.

After dedicating the award, OWL presented Greene's wife and daughter with a plaque.
