𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐡, 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Systems that don’t slide backward.

Growth is 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈…and it has a way of 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑐𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝑜𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑒.

What “worked” at a smaller size starts to strain: more jobs, more vendors, more payroll, more questions, more moving pieces and suddenly it feels like you’re constantly catching up.

𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐡, 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: When your gut doesn’t match the reports.

I hear this a lot: “Carrie, I have reports… but I don’t really trust them.”

And honestly, that makes total sense. When the numbers don’t feel solid, it’s hard to relax enough to use them.

Most of the time it’s not a competence problem. It’s a 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑚. A few things drift: job costs hit the wrong place, an account hasn’t been reconciled, payments sit unapplied, someone codes everything to one bucket just to get it done and suddenly the reports feel like a moving target🎯

𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐡, 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Cash flow that lets you exhale.

Cash flow stress is such a 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑒. Even strong businesses can feel like they’re holding their breath because money comes in unevenly, retainage hangs out there, a big bill hits at the wrong time, and payroll shows up like clockwork.

One of the biggest relief moments I see is when we move 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 “𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒” 𝑡𝑜 𝑎 𝑠𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘𝑙𝑦 𝑟ℎ𝑦𝑡ℎ𝑚. Nothing fancy. Just: what’s coming in, what’s going out, what absolutely has to be paid, and what can wait.

Pair that with a consistent AR follow-up cadence (instead of “we’ll circle back later”), and cash starts to feel…𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫.

I’m a big believer that you don’t need a perfect forecast to feel better. You need 𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂 𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖’𝒍𝒍 𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒌𝒆𝒆𝒑. That’s when you can exhale a little and make decisions without that constant edge.

𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐡, 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: No more panic-scrolling the bank app

If you’ve ever refreshed your bank balance a few too many times before making a decision…you’re in very good company.

I don’t see that as “bad decision-making.” I see it as what happens when you don’t have a trustworthy story behind the numbers.

Most owners I work with aren’t afraid of decisions - 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦’𝑟𝑒 𝑡𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑑 𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔. When the books are behind or reports are inconsistent, every decision gets heavier:
⟩Can we hire?
⟩Can we take on this job?
⟩Can we buy that equipment?
⟩Do we actually have the cash, or does it just look like we do today?

𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 come from a few practical things working together: reconciled accounts, job costs landing correctly, a close process that finishes, and a basic forward-looking cash view.

When one door closes, another opens.

I have never in all my years thought of the move from one year into a new one as a door. And why I am this year, makes me go "Hmmm".

Maybe it is because I'm excited for 2026 and what it promises.

Or maybe it is the several large moments from 2025 making the change feel like an ending.

What I do know is the picture below represents how I'm feeling about one door closing and the other opening.

I boxed up our Christmas decorations. I do it every year - the same ones go in the same boxes they came out of. I just ended up looking at them differently this year and being a bit melancholy instead of peaceful as a door closes.

And as customary, I made ham, cabbage and black eyed peas that one must consume on New Year's Day. I make these 3 items in different fashion every year and do not usually think twice about it. But as I worked in the kitchen today, I started feeling that 2026 will bring new and exciting things...the door opening.

I had no intention of making a "Look back" post and I don't think I did, but I certainly seemed to have some thoughts on change.

If your business runs on jobs or projects, your job costing might be telling half-truths even if your team is doing their best.

The hidden cost of messy job costing isn’t accounting. It’s decisions:
💰Pricing the next project off the wrong margin
💰Hiring based on false confidence
💰Taking on work that looks profitable… until it isn’t
💰Getting surprised when cash is tight in a “good” month
