Whew! It's been a trying few months y'all! I've got not one, but Three medical situations going on, and have been balancing my sweet girls, working out of the home, running both businesses during peak season, and settling into a new home. Overwhelmed is an understatement. I'm only one person and though my village of love is vast, the tangible help is very small. It's all on me.

So thank you, wholeheartedly to each and everyone of you who has been kind, patient, and understanding. Thank you also to the clients who actually take my advice regarding handling their business and making their job and mine so much easier. ☺️ We're in the home stretch. The Internal Revenue Service announced it’s making it easier for taxpayers to gather their tax documents by adding information return documents to their IRS Individual Online Account, helping consolidate important tax records into one digital location.

The first information returns to be added are Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement and Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement*. These forms will be available for tax years 2023 and 2024 under the Records and Status tab in the taxpayer’s Online Account.

Only information return documents issued in the taxpayer’s name will be available in their Online Account. Their spouse must log into their own Online Account to retrieve their information return documents. This is true whether they file a joint or separate return. Importantly, state and local tax information, including state and local tax information on the Form W-2, will not be available on Individual Online Account. Filers should continue to keep the records mailed to them by the original reporter.

*Form 1095-A, can now be viewed from within a taxpayer's IRS Individual Online Account.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED:

AL-2024-05, Oct. 1, 2024

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced today tax relief for individuals and businesses in the entire state of Alabama that were affected by Hurricane Helene that began on Sept. 22, 2024. These taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.

Following the disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), individuals and households that reside or have a business in all 67 counties qualify for tax relief.

The declaration permits the IRS to postpone certain tax-filing and tax-payment deadlines for taxpayers who reside or have a business in the disaster area. For instance, certain deadlines falling on or after Sept. 22, 2024, and before May 1, 2025, are granted additional time to file through May 1, 2025. As a result, affected individuals and businesses will have until May 1, 2025, to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period.

The May 1, 2025, filing deadline applies to:

Individuals and businesses whose 2024 returns are normally due during March and April 2025.
Individuals who had a valid extension to file their 2023 return due to run out on Oct. 15, 2024. The IRS noted, however, that because tax payments related to these 2023 returns were due on April 15, 2024, those payments are not eligible for this relief.
Calendar-year corporations whose 2023 extensions run out on Oct. 15, 2024.
The May 1, 2025, deadline also applies to any payment normally due during this period, including the quarterly estimated tax payments due on Jan. 15, and April 15, 2025. The May 1, 2025, deadline also applies to the quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due on Oct. 31, 2024, and Jan. 31 and April 30, 2025. In addition, penalties on payroll and excise tax deposits due on or after Sept. 22, 2024, and before Oct. 7, 2024, will be abated as long as the tax deposits are made by Oct. 7, 2024.

If an affected taxpayer receives a late filing or late payment penalty notice from the IRS that has an original filing, payment or deposit due date that falls within the postponement period, the taxpayer should call the telephone number on the notice to have the IRS abate the penalty.

The IRS automatically identifies taxpayers located in the covered disaster area and applies filing and payment relief. But affected taxpayers who reside or have a business located outside the covered disaster area should call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227 to request this tax relief.

The annual IRS Tax deadline is affected by the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act. It is the only Emancipation act that paid enslaved individuals, was put in place before the Emancipation Proclamation, and is commemorated on, April 16th each year. As a recognized federal holiday, if it falls on a weekend, it is observed on the nearest weekday, and so shifts the date for tax returns.
