Lowering taxes doesn’t always mean you are saving money!

I often see practice owners make decisions that reduce taxes—but they’re usually reactions to a last-minute projected tax bill.

Those knee-jerk moves can create cash stress, operational headaches, or long-term inefficiencies.

Good tax planning should:
• Be a year-round strategy
• Support practice goals
• Improve owner cash flow
• Align with how the practice actually operates

Yes, taxes matter.

But they should be planned throughout the year—not just at year-end—and never in isolation. The early bird gets the worm!

Something I often see in veterinary practices:

A practice can look profitable on paper and still struggle to pay bills. The issue is usually not with revenue.

Practice profit rarely equals cash in the bank. There’s timing – inventory purchases, payroll cycles, and other expenses that don’t always align with cash flow. And – there’s debt payments, tax estimates and draws that aren’t considered expenses.

Profit tells you if the practice works.
Cash flows tell you how livable practice ownership actually is.

Which one feels harder to manage in your practice right now-profit or cash flow?

Reviewing your cash flow statement is just as important as looking at your balance sheet and income statement. All three should be reviewed regularly with your accountant, you’ll be amazed at the answers you find!
