IMPORTANT one of my clients just got a text message to say their CT refund was processed and to text back deposit info. IT IS A SCAM.
Think about it. You provided direct deposit info when filing your return. And since when would the govt text you? And how did they get your cell number?
I know hearing from the government causes stress. That's why scammers impersonate government agencies - to catch you off guard.
If you are my client, and you receive any correspondence from the government, first, take a breath. Then CALL ME.
If you are not my client, take a breath and call your accountant.

I have noticed over the past several years that private companies are now sending out solicitations that look a LOT like government forms and notices.
I know I post the warning every year about paying some company $180 to file your annual report with the State of Connecticut.
Today I got a call from a client regarding the Employee Retention Credit. They faxed me the notice and it looked so much like a government form that I'm not surprised they were confused by it.

When you get something in the mail that looks official, best thing to do is call your tax professional. But the easiest (if you have a magnifying glass, that is,) way to tell is - at the very bottom of the page the private companies HAVE to identify themselves. This is one of those times it is very helpful to read the fine print!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

As it turns out, I cannot turn off the "public" audience availability. So, if you are not a Connecticut resident, please ignore this post.

It's October, and October in Connecticut is personal property declaration month for all businesses. This is not a tax due return; it is a declaration of personal property owned by the business as of October 1, and it determines what the personal property tax due will be next July (or the month when town taxes are due in your community.)

If you are a small business and you receive a personal property declaration form in the mail, and your accountant prepares the form, please get it to your accountant asap with a detail of all assets purchased between Jan 1 and September 30 so they can get it done for you by the November 1 filing deadline.

If you prepare it, please don't wait to get it done and filed. If it's late, the town will assess an additional 25% to your asset total and charge you tax on it. Ouch.

A change for teachers for 2022 tax filing.

For 2022, the amount increased to a maximum of $300 and will increase in $50 increments in future years based on inflation.

Okay, folks, an important reminder for this time of year, especially. Do NOT click on links in emails you get from what looks like professional organizations, government authorities, etc. This is the time of year that people are sending lots of really attractive information through the internet in one way or another, and lots of hackers are salivating, offering you many ways to give them that information unwittingly.
So, if you get an email from what looks like your state tax department, or the IRS, with a link in it, most likely it is NOT from that agency. To easily and safely check any correspondence from them, simply log in to your online account from your browser - NOT the link - and check. Whenever the agency sends out correspondence, they put that message in your account first.
Don't have an on line account? Then why would you click on a link that infers you have one?

ID Theft is a real thing. It puts you and all of your contacts (including me!) at risk. Simple common sense and paying attention to what you are looking at is an easy and effective way to prevent or at least drastically reduce the risk of ID theft.

If you are unsure of something, and you are my client, ask me. If you're not my client, ask your tax advisor or computer techie guy/gal.

You should receive an email from the Office of the Secretary of the State 30 days prior to annual report due date. The direct link to file the annual report is: https://business.ct.gov/file-annual-report If you have not established an account in the SoS’s new online portal, please do so at CT.Gov Account

OF NOTE: the Secretary of State’s office is working to address a ‘glitch’ in the system which may inaccurately report your filings are up to date. If you have not filed your Annual Report for 2021, check the website in 48 -72 hours as the repairs should be reflected.

Just got this from CTCPA -

"The IRS will be sending out two letters to taxpayers in January:
Letter 6419 - Advance Child Tax Credit Payments
Letter 6475 - Economic Impact (Stimulus) Payment

It is important that your clients retain these letters. Entering incorrect advance child tax credit or economic impact payment amounts will cause delays in tax return processing and the issuance of refunds."

Please keep these letters! They are so helpful to us as tax preparers!
