It’s 10:47 PM on April 14…and you’re still trying to fix your books.

Receipts everywhere.
Transactions you don’t recognize.
Numbers you’re hoping are right.

Your tax preparer is waiting…and you’re feeling it.

This is the part no one talks about — how stressful tax season gets when your books aren’t ready.

But here’s the reality:

You still have time to get your books into solid shape.

Enough to:
✔️ Reconcile your accounts
✔️ Clean up the biggest issues
✔️ Hand over numbers you actually feel confident in — instead of hoping they’re right

Because the difference between “scrambling” and “ready” is usually just getting the right help at the right time.

If your books aren’t where they should be, don’t wait until the night before.

📩 Message me today and let’s get your books cleaned up before the deadline hits.

Tired of rebuilding the same report over and over again?

A lot of business owners don’t realize this…

In QuickBooks Online, you can save (memorize) your custom reports so they’re ready whenever you need them.

That means:
• No more resetting filters every time
• No more adjusting date ranges
• No more rebuilding the same report from scratch

Once you customize a report the way you like it—you can save it and pull it up in seconds.

This is especially helpful if you regularly review:
• Monthly Profit & Loss
• Expense breakdowns
• Job or project reports

Because the easier it is to pull your numbers…the more likely you are to actually use them.

And that’s where better decisions start.

One transaction…but it doesn’t belong in just one category?

This is where a lot of books start to get messy in QuickBooks Online.

Let’s say you make a purchase at a store like:
• Home Depot
• Amazon
• Walmart

That one charge might include:
• Supplies
• Equipment
• Office items

But if you categorize the entire transaction as just one expense, your reports won’t be accurate.

That’s where “Split” comes in.

Instead of forcing it into one category, you can break the transaction into multiple categories right from the bank feed.

✔ More accurate expense tracking
✔ Cleaner reports
✔ Better insight into where your money is actually going

It’s a small step that makes a big difference in how reliable your numbers are.

Because when your expenses are categorized correctly, your numbers actually mean something.

This weekend, the Topeka Business Network had the opportunity to be part of Easter Fest and it was such a great time connecting with the community!

We handed out a lot of candy and snacks 🍬 (pretty sure we kept a few kids fully stocked for the day 😄), but even better were the conversations we got to have with families.

I also want to give a couple shout-outs to two amazing women in our group:

✨ Brittany — If you’ve ever talked insurance with her, you know she’s the real deal! She’s an independent agent with Brittany Elliott-All Insurance Access, LLC who offers auto, home, life, and more! The way she connects with people and explains things so clearly is honestly impressive. It’s always fun watching her in action!

🎈 Kristin — She donated the beautiful balloon arch for the event and I got to help her put it together (I used the fancy air machine for the purple and yellow balloons 💪). I had no idea how much detail goes into those setups and she absolutely nailed it! If you haven’t seen her work, you need to check out Vubbix Balloons— she’s constantly creating some really fun designs!

Moments like this are exactly what our group is about—supporting each other, growing our businesses, and showing up for the community.

If you’re a small business owner or entrepreneur looking for a place to connect, share ideas, and grow, we’d love to have you join us!

The Topeka Business Network meets every Tuesday at 9am, it’s industry-exclusive, and completely free!

Or if you’d ever like to come be a guest speaker and share about your business, we’d love that too!

Nobody claps for this part…

Not the late nights answering messages when everyone else has logged off.
Not the time you spent fixing a mistake no one will ever know happened.
Not the hours you’ve put into learning things you were never trained to do.

No one sees the follow-ups.
The reschedules.
The problem-solving.
The moments you wanted to quit, but didn’t.

They only see the finished product.
The “success.”
The highlight reel.

But the truth is…this invisible work is the business.

It’s what builds trust.
It’s what keeps customers coming back.
It’s what separates people who talk about it from people who actually grow something.

So if it feels like no one is noticing right now, you’re not behind.
You’re building something most people aren’t willing to.

Keep going 💪

If you had to hand your books to your tax preparer today…would you feel ready?

Right now, there are two types of business owners:
• The ones scrambling at the last minute
• And the ones who already know their numbers are solid

Imagine heading into April knowing:
✔️ Every account is reconciled
✔️ Every transaction is categorized
✔️ Your reports are clean and accurate

No scrambling. No guessing. No stress when your tax preparer has questions.

Just confidence and clarity on where your business actually stands.

If your books aren’t quite there yet, you’re not behind — you just need a plan.

That’s exactly what I help with.

📩 If you need a clean-up or catch-up before the deadline, send me a message. Let’s get this handled so you can move forward with confidence.

If your books have always felt off…this might be why.

Your opening balance is the starting point for your entire set of books in QuickBooks Online.

And if it’s wrong?

Everything after it can be off too.

We’re talking:
• Bank balances that never quite match
• Reconciliations that don’t make sense
• Reports that feel…off

The tricky part?
Most business owners don’t even realize their opening balance is the issue.

Because the problem didn’t start today—it started on day one.

This is one of the first things I check when cleaning up books.

Fixing it can bring everything back into alignment faster than you’d expect.

Running a business will humble you real quick.

You can do everything right…and still have moments where you think,
“Yeah, I could’ve handled that better.”

I had one of those moments recently.

And instead of brushing past it, I went back, fixed it, and made sure it was done the way it should’ve been the first time.

That’s the part people don’t always talk about.
Growth isn’t just about learning new things…it’s about being willing to revisit what you’ve already done and make it better.

Mistakes happen.
Staying the same after them is the real problem.

Most small business owners think it’s too late to fix their books for taxes. It’s not.

With the April 15 deadline getting closer, a lot of small business owners run into the same issues:
• uncategorized transactions
• missing expenses
• unreconciled accounts

And here’s the problem, messy books don’t just create stress…they can actually cost you money.

If expenses aren’t properly recorded or accounts don’t match, you could be:
❌ Missing deductions
❌ Overpaying in taxes
❌ Sending unclear numbers to your tax preparer

The good news? There’s still time to clean things up and make sure your numbers are accurate before everything is finalized.

Even a quick clean-up or catch-up can make a big difference.

If your books aren’t quite where they should be, I help small business owners get everything organized, reconciled, and tax-ready without the overwhelm.

📩 Send me a message if you want to make sure you’re not leaving money on the table this tax season.

Duplicate vendors are quietly messing up your reports.

It doesn’t seem like a big deal at first…

But having the same vendor or customer listed multiple times in QuickBooks Online can lead to:
• Split expense totals
• Incomplete reports
• Confusion at tax time

And suddenly your numbers don’t tell the full story.

The good news?
You can merge duplicate vendors or customers and clean it up in minutes.

Once merged, everything rolls into one profile—giving you:
✔ More accurate reports
✔ Cleaner records
✔ Less confusion when it matters most

Small cleanup steps like this make a big difference in how reliable your numbers really are.

If your reports ever feel off, duplicates like this are often part of the problem.

One of the best parts of working for yourself is remembering why you started.

Last week, I was helping a business diagnose an issue in their books. At first, the answer wasn’t obvious. It took patience, digging through the details, and working through several possibilities before everything finally clicked and the problem was solved.

When I got home, I took my dog for a walk and ended up laying in the grass looking up at the sky.

Moments like that remind me why I chose to leave my 9–5. I wanted the flexibility to pause, breathe, and appreciate the world around me. I also wanted the chance to explore the possibilities that come with building something of my own.

Running a business takes persistence, hard work, and trust, from both the people who support you and the clients who allow you to serve them. Being my own boss isn’t always easy, but I’m grateful for the opportunity, the possibilities it creates for my family, and the path that led me here.

If you’re feeling stretched too thin or carrying a lot right now, take a moment to pause and breathe. Sometimes a little perspective is all we need to reconnect with the reasons we started.

Maybe the reminder you need is as simple as a few quiet minutes looking up at the sky.

If the thing weighing on you happens to be your bookkeeping, I’m always happy to help lighten that load.
