Insurance is waaay too expensive these days to miss out on writing it off (if you qualify).

When you're self-employed, you may be able to deduct your health insurance premiums (including dental, vision, and qualifying long-term care premiums). This can apply to your spouse + dependents' premiums too!

What doesn't qualify? ↓

If you (or your spouse) were eligible for employer-sponsored coverage, this can affect whether you're able to deduct your premiums for those months.

The keyword here is eligible; this rule applies even if you didn't enroll in the employer-sponsored coverage. For each month you (or your spouse) were eligible, you can't deduct your SE health insurance premiums.

Also, the deduction can't exceed your earned self-employment income!

It's extremely nuanced, but extremely impactful deductions like these that small businesses can miss out on when they're not working with an Enrolled Agent!

The number of people who file an extension and then don't look at their taxes again until October 14th is waaay too high. 🫣

I'm not judging, here's what I'd recommend that everyone who has filed an extension do between NOW and October:

Make a list of any missing tax documents. If you're an existing client and you've already uploaded a lot, we can let you know what we're still missing.

Make sure you've paid what you owe (an extension doesn't give you more time to pay, just to file your return).

If you don't have a plan to get your return filed, reach out to schedule a new client call!

🚨 BIG IRS UPDATE THAT MILLIONS OF TAXPAYERS NEED TO SEE 🚨

The National Taxpayer Advocate is warning that tens of millions of taxpayers may be entitled to refunds or penalty abatements related to IRS penalties and interest charged during the COVID disaster period. 👀

This stems from the ongoing Kwong v. United States case, which argues that many IRS filing/payment deadlines should have been postponed during the federal COVID disaster declaration period (roughly January 2020 through July 2023).

Translation? 👇

If you had:
✔️ Failure-to-file penalties
✔️ Failure-to-pay penalties
✔️ Estimated tax penalties
✔️ Interest charged during that period
…you might qualify for a refund or reduction. 💰

BUT — and this is the important part — this is NOT automatic.

Most taxpayers will need to file a refund claim (typically Form 843) by July 10, 2026, to protect their rights.

The IRS has reportedly assessed over 120 MILLION penalties during that timeframe, so this could impact a huge number of individuals and business owners.

A few important notes:
⚠️ The case is still being litigated/appealed
⚠️ This does NOT mean everyone automatically qualifies
⚠️ Filing requirements are technical and time-sensitive
⚠️ Protective claims may be necessary even before the case is finalized

This is one of those situations where being proactive matters. The “well advised” taxpayers may protect their refund rights while others never realize they were potentially eligible. 👀

If you received IRS penalties during the COVID years, now is the time to review your transcripts and discuss your options with a qualified tax professional.

(And yes… this is exactly why representation and staying informed matters.)

📣 Out of Office (But for a Very Good Reason) 📣

I’ll be out of the office May 2–19 while I head to Washington, D.C. for the NAEA Capitol Hill Fly-In where Enrolled Agents from across the country meet with members of Congress to advocate for taxpayers, tax professionals, and smarter tax policy.

In short: I’m taking your tax headaches straight to Capitol Hill. 🇺🇸

After that, I’ll be spending some much-needed time with my daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren before returning to the office.

Response times will be limited while I’m away.

If you have an urgent matter, please text (727) 421-5140 and I’ll respond as time allows.

Otherwise, I’ll be back in the office on May 20 and will catch up on all non-urgent matters as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience while I go do my professional civic duty… and then my mom/grandma duty. 💙
