Losing a spouse changes everything β€” and finances rarely adjust the way people expect.

Here are the three biggest myths that catch surviving spouses off guard:

Myth #1: "Expenses will go down." Often, they go up. The lawn the husband mowed now costs $150 a month. The repairs, handyman work, and household tasks one spouse handled for free now come with an invoice. The mortgage and utilities don't shrink either.

Myth #2: "Taxes will stay about the same." Not even close. It's called the Widow's Tax β€” and it's the most underestimated cost of losing a spouse. The same income gets pushed into single-filer brackets, the standard deduction is cut in half, and many surviving spouses owe thousands more each year.
