America needs tax reform. This is just a start.

Sign the petition!

If you get a refund each year, nothing will change for you. You could still file earlier and get a refund.

This affects business owners, tax professionals and people who owe in.

Maxing out your 401(k) is great. Forgetting about access can get awkward fast.

This is where retirement advice gets a little more nuanced.

Yes, the 401(k) is one of the best wealth-building tools available.

Yes, maxing it out consistently can absolutely create millionaire status.

And yes, retiring before 59½ can create some weird access problems if you didn’t plan ahead.

But the image leaves out an important detail.

There’s something called the Rule of 55, which can allow penalty-free withdrawals from a 401(k) if you separate from service in or after the year you turn 55. The IRS lists this as an exception to the 10% early distribution tax, and it generally applies to qualified workplace plans, not traditional IRAs. (IRS)

Translation:

The 401(k) isn’t the villain here.

The problem is building a retirement plan with zero liquidity strategy.

Taxable brokerage accounts matter.

Cash reserves matter.

Roth contributions can matter.

Knowing which accounts to touch first REALLY matters.

The goal isn’t just to retire with a big number.

The goal is to retire with money you can actually use, in the right order, without accidentally paying penalties because your plan was basically “save hard and hope.”

Big companies and corporations have realized Americans want to support small businesses, so they pretend to be small.

Or they buy a small, local business and keep the name and don't tell anyone. People think they are supporting a small family owned business and they are not.

Then they buy up all of the businesses in the same industry so when you shop around, you aren't actually shopping around.

The problem is people aren't getting better service, they aren't being taken care of. They're being taken advantage of, the owners/ investors don't care about anything except for making money. The product and service suffer, the customers suffer, our communities suffer.

We're being tricked by these big corporations and it isn't right. We need to support actual small businesses and do our research.

(One of the printing companies in Sandusky was bought out by a large corporate office supply store chain after the owner retired and we all think we're supporting a local family, when we are actually just being tricked.)
