Beginning with tax year 2026, taxpayers who do not itemize may be able to deduct up to $1,000 in cash contributions, or $2,000 for married taxpayers filing jointly, made to certain qualified organizations.

Tax Tip 2026-57, July 23, 2026 — Taxpayers who have made or plan to make charitable donations during the year should keep good records of all their contributions.

For payments made before 2026, the reporting threshold is $600. For payments made in 2026, the reporting threshold is $2,000. For payments made after 2026, see Pub. 1099 for the inflation-adjusted reporting threshold.

A piece of U.S. tax history:
Today I had a client (born in 1945) give me these 1943 1040A and estimated tax voucher that he got from his grandfather. Apparently 1943 was the first year for payroll tax withholdings. Notice the estimated tax bracket tops out at $10,000.

Are you a California employer with at least one employee? You must have a 401k plan set up by December 31, 2025 or there will be penalties. You do not need to fund the 401K, but you do need to make it available to the employee through payroll deduction.
