Humana announced recently that about 600,000 Medicare Advantage members are expected to have plans that will not be offered in 2027.

Affected plans and counties have not all been identified yet, but it's another good reminder to review your Medicare coverage during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7.

If you receive a non-renewal notice this fall:
• Your current coverage will stay active through December 31st
• Review any alternative plan carefully (factor-in your doctors, prescriptions and costs)
• If your plan is being discontinued, you may also have guaranteed-issue rights to certain Medicare Supplement plans

Affected beneficiaries will have to select new coverage or transition to Original Medicare for 2027.

Congratulations to all of the San Antonio-area educators who completed their first week of the new school year! 🍎

Last week, I had the opportunity to meet with educators across several local campuses during my annual TRS and retirement presentations.

Whether it's your first year in education or you've been serving students for many years, understanding your retirement benefits and having a long-term plan is essential.

Thank you to the campuses and educators who welcomed me this year, and I hope everyone gets some well-deserved time to relax and recharge this weekend! ❤️

The woman in this story ended up paying over $600 in Medicare late-enrollment penalties simply because a required document wasn’t included when she enrolled.

Medicare can be complicated, which is why planning ahead and working with a trustworthy, experienced agent can make such a difference.

A good agent should do more than help you enroll. They should help guide you through the process and make sure you understand the steps along the way.

Have you heard about the new 530A child investment accounts? 👶

Here's a quick overview:

🏛️ A new federal law recently created 530A accounts to help families begin investing for their children's future.

💰 Additionally, eligible children born between 2025 and 2028 may qualify for a one-time $1,000 government contribution to help jump-start their account.

📈 Family, friends, and others may also be able to contribute each year (subject to annual contribution limits).

The funds are intended to support future goals such as higher education, purchasing a first home, starting a business, or even retirement.

A few things to know:
• This is an investment account, not a traditional savings account.
• Eligibility requirements apply for the government contribution.
• The account is designed for long-term investing.

As these accounts begin rolling out, I expect many parents and grandparents to have questions. My goal is simply to keep you informed.

Great news for San Antonio and the Southside! 💪

Toyota Motor Corp. confirmed San Antonio will be the location of a $3.6 billion expansion that will add 2,000 jobs at its sprawling South Side campus.

The investment, which will double the size of the manufacturing complex, will move production of the Tacoma pickup back to San Antonio. bit.ly/4f1RJau

A few important things to know:

• This is not automatic coverage for everyone.
• It is separate from the member’s normal Part D plan.
• Eligibility will depend on CMS criteria.
• The member’s doctor will need to submit the authorization request.

With how many people have asked about medications like these, I expect this to be a major topic over the next year or so.

A clarification I find myself explaining often to educators is the difference between a 403(b) and 401(k).

A lot of teachers will say: “My spouse has a 401(k)…I want to have one as well” or “Does my school district match my 403(b)?”

They are similar retirement accounts, but a big difference is where you work:

🏢 401(k)s are commonly offered by private companies (HEB, Valero, Frost Bank, Walmart, etc.).

🧑‍🏫 Whereas 403(b)s are typically offered by public schools, universities, churches, and certain non-profits.

Another BIG difference: Most school districts do NOT match 403(b) contributions the same way many private companies match 401(k)s.

That’s why it’s important for educators to understand how their TRS pension + 403(b) work together for retirement planning purposes.

Honestly, a lot of the confusion is understandable because most people hear about 401(k)s far more often online, in commercials, or from family and friends.
