Here are some tips to help with your 2022 tax season:

1. Gather tax paperwork and records for accuracy to avoid missing a deduction or credit.
Taxpayers should have all their important and necessary documents before preparing their return. This helps people file a complete and accurate tax return. Errors and omissions slow down tax processing, including refund times.

Some information taxpayers need before they begin includes:

Social Security numbers for everyone listed on the tax return,
Bank account and routing numbers,
Various tax forms such as W-2s, 1099s, 1098s and other income documents or records of digital asset transactions,
Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace statement,
Any IRS letters citing an amount received for a certain tax deduction or credit.
2. Remember to report all types of income on the tax return.
This is important to avoid receiving a notice or a bill from the IRS. Don't forget to include income from:

Goods created and sold on online platforms,
Investment income,
Part-time or seasonal work,
Self-employment or other business activities,
Services provided through mobile apps.
3. File electronically with direct deposit to avoid delays in receiving a refund.
5. Choose a tax professional carefully.
Most tax return preparers are professional, honest and provide excellent service to their clients. However, dishonest tax return preparers who file false income tax returns do exist. The IRS has a Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications and more on choosing a tax pro on IRS.gov.

5. Avoid phone delays; use online resources before calling the IRS.
To avoid waiting on hold, the IRS urges people to use IRS.gov to get answers to tax questions, check a refund status or pay taxes. There's no wait time or appointment needed — online tools and resources are available 24 hours a day.

FYI: The IRS just extended the tax season until May 17th 2021.

Some highlights of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021

* Round 3 stimulus payment $1400 per taxpayer ($2800 for married filling joint) plus $1400 per dependent. The payment starts to phase out when AGI exceeds $75,000 (single) $150,000( married filing joint)

* The first $10,200 of your unemployment compensation is non-taxable.

* Child tax credit is increased to $3000 per qualifying child and $3600 in the case of a qualifying child five or younger as of December 31, 2021. * The age limitation is increased from 16 to age 17.

Just a PSA:

The Internal Revenue Service reminds first-time filers and those who usually don't have a federal filing requirement to consider filing a 2020 tax return. They may be eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, a new refundable credit, authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act and the COVID-related Tax Relief Act.

Most individuals eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit have already received the full amount in two rounds of payments, known as Economic Impact Payments. All legally permitted first and second Economic Impact Payments have been issued.

Individuals who were eligible but did not receive the first or second Economic Impact Payment or received less than the full amounts may be eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit and must file a 2020 federal tax return, even if they do not usually file a tax return.

Taxpayers who received the full amounts of both Economic Impact Payments won't claim the Recovery Rebate Credit or include any information about the payments on their 2020 tax return because the IRS already issued their Recovery Rebate Credit in advance as Economic Impact Payments.
