This Fourth of July, I'm thinking about two groups of people we owe a great deal to.
First, our Founding Fathers, who had the courage to break from the only system they'd ever known, and the foresight to build something designed to protect individual liberty rather than concentrate power. The idea that a person's rights don't depend on the permission of a king, or anyone else, was radical then and still matters now. Land of the free isn't just a line in a song. It's the freedom to build a business, raise a family your own way, speak your mind, and chart your own path, with the government answering to the people instead of the other way around.
Second, the men and women of our military, past and present, who stand watch so the rest of us can actually live that freedom without a second thought about our safety.
Independence isn't free. It was earned, and it's maintained every single day. Grateful for both.
Happy Fourth of July!
