If you're 70½ or older and you give to charity, read this.

There's a rule in the tax code most retirees have never heard of: the Qualified Charitable Distribution. QCD for short.

You send money straight from your IRA to a qualified charity. It never counts as income on your tax return.

That matters because:
• You don't need to itemize to benefit
• Less of your Social Security may be taxed
• Your Medicare premiums may stay where they are
• Once you turn 73, the gift can satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution

You were going to give. The IRS was going to make you take the RMD. A QCD makes them the same move.

Full plain-English explainer on the blog. https://lyonsresources.com/qcd

The plain version: if you're 70½ or older and you have a traditional IRA, you can send money straight from the IRA to a charity — and that money never counts as income on your tax return.
